Not a typo on our part! Pattern back reads that way! :(

I look forward to the day when the big companies put all the sizes in one envelope. I do hope that missing out size 16 altogether is a typo. Because its certainly pretty dopey. There would be a lot of women who are 12-14 on top and 16-18 on bottom. You can guarantee they wont choose any of the patterns with a Sizes 6-14, 18W-24W split.

Umm...size 16 appears to be missing! Pft to McCalls.

Hi. The time is 1 PM, Eastern Time, Daylight Savings Time. Sorry for the confusion!

Sorry about my comment. If I knew how to delete it, I would! What I meant to ask is in regard to the statement that "Eastern Time is accurate." Because at the top of the page it says "1 PM EST," and I think that means "1 PM Eastern Standard Time." Where I live, we are on Daylight Savings time, not Standard time, so I'm wondering if you really meant standard time or daylight savings time? Either way, I checked out Meg's blog, and I really enjoyed it. I'm sure it will be a wonderful discussion. Thanks for offering these chats!

Announcing the "Mini-Wardrobe 2011" Contest Winners!By DianeSev on 4/21/11 12:22 PM

"Mini-Wardrobe 2011 - Expand Your Wardrobe" Contest

Imagine being able to wake up in the morning, walk to your closet and grab today's outfit with your eyes closed...all before you've had your morning coffee!

We can envy the 59 participants in this contest, who are able to do just that because they now have a mini-wardrobe!

The object of this contest was to select one piece already in your wardrobe and to make four more pieces to match it.

Congratulations to all the participants for doing just that! Take a look at what they accomplished!

Now let's meet the winners.

First Prize (By Member Vote):
Patty the Snug Bug for her Mini-Wardrobe Entries.

photo
Pictured: Vogue 1027 - The March Dress

Patty the Snug Bug was working on a spring wardrobe and realized if she made one more skirt, she could enter the Mini-Wardrobe contest. And so she did! She used her recycled and altered Rose Garden Cami as the centerpiece of her wardrobe.

She made 4 pieces: Simplicity 2601 - The Wheatgrass Blouse, New Look 6735 - The Polka T, the self-drafted Lotus Blossom skirt, and Vogue 1027 - the March Dress.

She chose Vogue 1027 (pictured above) because she loved the cap sleeves, the pleating at the bust and the fact that it was suited for a knit (even though, she says, "some of the instructions were a bit wackadoodle for a knit").

She made it from a mid-range poly-jersey she bought from Hancock. She calls it "slippery, difficult to serge, but impervious to wrinkles, and, most importantly, white basset hound fur!"

An integral part of her Mini-Wardrobe, she loves it, made it again in a jungle print and plans to make it in hot pink, if she can find the same fabric!

Congratulations, Patty the Snug Bug!

Random Entry Prize
Sewshable1 for her her Mini-Wardrobe Entries.

photo
Pictured: BurdaStyle Magazine: 05-1993-118 (Jean style shorts)

Sewshable1 discovered this contest while she was planning her granddaughter's summer wardrobe. She chose a purchased white T-shirt as the centerpiece of the Mini-Wardrobe.

To match the T-shirt, she made red denim shorts from BurdaStyle Magazine: 05-1993-118, a skirt from New Look 6030, a floral top from Burdastyle 6-1995-116, and a tie-on cami from a Japanese pattern book called Linen.

She'd always wanted to try out BurdaStyle Magazine patterns, and since her DGD is at that early teen stage and not ready for grown-up fashion and sizing, this was a perfect opportunity to sew some patterns from the magazine. The red denim shorts pictured above were her first item.

She was thrilled that the shorts were very easy to sew. They fit together perfectly! And, most importantly, when she finished sewing them, they looked like the photo in the magazine.

She says that the T-shirt goes with all the bottoms and one of the tops for a total of 10 outfits!

Congratulations, Sewshable1!

And congratulations to all our contestants for creating such great mini-wardrobes!

A Touch of Glamour by Angela WolfBy Angela Wolf on 4/5/11 3:30 PM

A Touch of Glamour
by Angela Wolf

Angela Wolf is the designer and founder behind ABO Apparel, Angela Wolf Ready-to-Wear and ABO Sport. An A-list clientele has given Angela more than fifteen years of experience dressing and fitting many diverse women and has enabled her to understand the different styles that compliment each individual woman.

Embellishment...

One of my favorite trends for the upcoming summer and fall season is creative embellishment. Lace, sheer fabric, and beading are the top three. If you ever wanted to create your own unique look with a basic pattern, now is the time to start.

I can't help but think of KOOS when I view some of the wild combinations coming down the runways. I actually had the opportunity to visit his studio in NY a few years ago. Simply amazing!

One of his techniques was the inspiration behind the two pieces you see below. These are just basic jacket and dress patterns sewn out of an Italian cotton fabric. The design you see comes from a leopard lace fabric, cut into small pieces and hand beaded onto the garment. This is just one idea you can do to your basic jacket pattern. Be creative!

photo
Pictured: Angela Wolf Jacket and Dress, Embellished with Lace and Hand-beaded

A Touch of Silver & Gold...

Silver and gold are not just for Christmas anymore; it looks like this trend is becoming a staple in the wardrobe category for the next two seasons...from simple sequin tanks to lamé shorts. Although I will be passing on the shorts, I really like the idea of adding a little sparkle to my everyday look.

Just a few tips for sewing with sequin knit or lamé fabrics:

  • Make sure you use a new sewing machine needle.
  • Use a stretch needle size 10 or 12.
  • Set the sewing machine stitch length 2.5 or 3.0. Sew a small swatch and check to make sure the seam is not puckering.
  • Use a double needle to hem, unless you are lucky enough to have a "coverstitch" on your serger.

photo
Pictured: Burda 7645 SHIRT/TOP

Burda 7645 would be a great pattern to try out with a sequin fabric. This look with a belt is very popular right now, but you could also tuck the tank into jeans and add a cute jacket.

photo
Pictured: Burda 7354 T-SHIRT

This Burda Style Pattern 7354 is another great pattern right now and I would change the fabric to silk charmeuse or a printed chiffon for a completely different look.

photo
Pictured: Vogue Patterns 8504 MISSES' TUNIC, TOP AND PANTS

With all the gorgeous sheer fabrics that are available right now, I would have a hard time passing up on Vogue 8504. Even the pants are a nice cut.

Quick Trend Update

Going into summer...

  • Top colors: white, salmon, teal
  • Top design: stripes (be careful with those ... check out my blog for tips)
  • Top fabrics: lace, chiffon, sheer, light weight knits
  • Top shoes: wedge heels and chunky heels

Going into fall...

  • Top colors: I am not through all the runway shows yet, but I am seeing A LOT of grey, bronze, and emerald green
  • Top design: mixing prints and novelty fabrics - think of scrapbooking on clothing or a collage!
  • Top fabric: fur, leather, and lace (sounds like a great movie :))
  • Hand bags in many colors

For those of you looking for a very easy top, try Vogue Patterns 8651 Misses' Tunic. I have a similar top in my Spring Collection out of bamboo knit. It is so comfortable and flattering!

I hope you try something new this month and always feel free to ask me any questions!

Vogue 8651 would look great on many figures, including a figure with larger hips / tummy as long as you choose the right fabrics. Soft knit fabrics like viscose/spandex or a light weight knit would be very flattering. What fabric are you thinking of?
