Recap for Trouser Draft Workshop, January 28 to 30, 2011

On January 28 - 30, we held our second PatternReview.com workshop at the Chocksett Inn in Sterling, MA. 22 PR members participated in the hands-on Trouser Draft Workshop, led by master teacher, Kenneth D. King.

We began bright and early Friday morning with a light breakfast and followed by getting settled in a roomy but cozy workroom at the Inn. Kenneth then gave instructions to the group on how to pair up and take a series of measurements. The next few hours were devoted to translating these measurements into a set of dimensions to create a paper trouser pattern for each member! Kenneth spent a lot of time asking “You with me?” There was a lot to take in!

After breaking for a delicious lunch in the Inn’s pub, we continued construction of our trouser patterns while being entertained by Kenneth’s hilarious anecdotes of life as a fashion designer!

By five o’clock, many members were just getting into a groove, and, since they were spending the weekend at the Inn, were able to stay late and start early the next morning!

On Saturday, we had a full day of muslin fittings and adjustments. Kenneth worked his way around the room, helping each member individually to make sure everyone had a draft that followed her own specific measurements. Somehow, he never ran out of stories to tell; there was a good amount of laughter in the room.

We took a break in the morning for a Yankee Stash Swap! There were many beautiful fabrics trading hands, but the most coveted was a lovely peacock feather, pleated polyester from Sawyer Brook - which ended up with Acient3!

We broke for another delicious lunch, followed by more fittings and a second muslin trouser moulage.

There was a PatternReview “shop” where members could purchase a variety of items, including the Trouser Draft CD by Kenneth King. We also provided a resource library of a selection of past articles in Threads magazine pertaining to pants construction and fitting.

At the end of the day, thanks to Sharon1952, workshop attendees were able to visit Sawyer Brook Fabrics in nearby Clinton, MA, for a private shopping trip! This is a wonderful fabrics resource, especially for their swatch service. Sawyer Brook gave every participant a coupon for 20% off her purchase. Thank you, Sharon1952, and THANK YOU, Sawyer Brook Fabrics!

On Sunday, we continued with a final tweaking of the fit of the trouser muslins. Kenneth gave a wonderful lecture about how to add ease and other design details such as waistband, pleats and pockets.

At lunch in the pub, we had cheesecake for dessert and celebrated a birthday for donna mel. When we returned to the workroom, we held a raffle for a free online class on PR. Nurse Jane was the lucky winner!

The Trouser Workshop concluded at around 3 PM with lots of hugs and well wishes and with all attendees in possession of their own perfectly-fitting trouser pattern! Well done, all!

I am hoping to start a Trouser Sew Along...I've made a muslin, but it was a bust. Does anyone who went to the Workshop want to join me?

Kenneth has a way of making a seemingly difficult task easily possible. Not everyone can teach the thing they are skilled in, but Kenneth can and he does it with such zest and fun. I learned so much and now can make pants that fit!
