Tip 732: French SeamsBy DianeSev on 1/5/12 11:05 AM

A French seam is really not difficult to make and gives a beautiful finish. Here are the steps:

  1. Pin fabric wrong sides together.
  2. Sew seam with a scant 1/4" (6 mm) allowance and press - first flat, then open.
  3. Turn the fabric right sides together and press the seamed edge.
  4. Stitch 3/8" (1 cm) away from the seamed edge, enclosing the raw edge.
  5. Press seam flat, then to one side. Ta-daa! You have a beautiful French seam.

I love making French seams in certain garments, they give such a finished look for the appropriate seams and fabrics. They are more time consuming, but worth the effort!
