The Little Black Dress.
Such allure, such cachet, such je ne sais quoi.
So Audrey Hepburn, so Coco Chanel.
The Little Black Dress (or “LBD”, as we fondly call it) is the ultimate wardrobe staple of the well-dressed woman. The LBD is supposed to carry a woman through the many occasions in life…the office, the dinner, the party, the wedding, the funeral. Given its importance in couture, it makes absolute sense that we have a contest for this fashion must-have on PatternReview.
The fashion-forward members in this contest decided to add an LBD of their own to their closets.
Most chose to sew their creations in black, but others chose grey or even lace fabric (the rules allowed other dark colors). Members photographed themselves in several views to show the diversity of the dress with accessories and wardrobe pieces like jackets or shrugs.
All of the dresses are gorgeous, and we are so envious that we are not the ones to wear them! But we can live vicariously by looking at the gallery photos!
Let’s meet the winners you voted for…
First Prize (by Member Vote): Jstarr4250 for New Look 6067 Misses' pleated dress in two lengths with sleeve and belt variations
Jstarr4250 chose New Look 6067 as a pattern for her LBD. She chose the sleeveless version and found the instructions easy enough, but they were mixed in with the directions for the other views. She says that the next time she makes the dress, she’ll copy the instructions and highlight the ones that apply before she sews a stitch.
She made the dress in a black wool ponte knit from Mood Fabrics, with poly knit lining and says that if she were still living in New York instead of South Carolina, she’d made a whole winter wardrobe from this fabric. There was a snag in getting the fabric, though, because New York (where Mood Fabrics is based) was hit by Hurricane Sandy, and there was a two-week delay in shipping the fabric.
Nonetheless, she eventually got the fabric, sewed the dress posthaste and wore it to an LBD girls’ night out, reaching home, like Cinderella, just before the stroke of midnight to enter it into this contest.
She loves the V-shaped pleats meeting at the center that create soft bust shaping in place of darts and says that they look much more complicated than they are and match up perfectly. The tulip skirt is also one of her favorite shapes.
The LBD contest is her first PatternReview contest, and now for the happy ending…she won!
