Shannon - you will be missedBy Deepika on 4/19/10 11:23 AM

Today, words fail me as I write this, for it is a sad day today. I lost a teacher, a mentor and above all, A Friend.

Today, we say goodbye to Shannon Gifford, our beloved teacher and sewing enthusiast. After battling with cancer for more than one year Shannon passed away last night with a smile on her face. She talked about her life for which she was thankful and grateful. She talked about her family, her friends and her students whom she loved.

From FBA to Stitch and Flip Jacket construction to her Beginner 101 sewing classes, Shannon de-mystified the sewing process for everyone. While teaching, she went above and beyond to help students achieve the perfect fit whether it was a small dart or a princess seam, she never gave up. She always had a solution for every sewing dilemma. Even in her last days, she was giving sewing tips!

Besides teaching Sewing Classes on PatternReview, Shannon ran, a website dedicated to help sewers from all around the world. In her newsletter, she talked about interesting sewing projects, addressed fit issues and talked about sewing and fashion trends. Shannon also developed an eBook on zipper techniques which was very well received! Always ready to help sewers in any way she can, Shannon was truly and completely devoted to the art of Sewing.

Shannon was much loved on PatternReview and worldwide in the sewing community. Hundreds of e-mails poured in when I asked if people wanted to send prayers her way which was compiled into two booklets and sent to her. Just goes on to show how many lives she touched with her kindness and generosity.

So, today as we grieve her loss, let us close our eyes and think of her. And if I may suggest, let us sew something this week in her honor.

Shannon, you will be missed deeply.

If you wish to express your thoughts and memories, please post on this topic

Shannon was an inspiration -- a knowledgeable, patient, thoughtful teacher who communicated her enthusiasm even through the virtual airwaves. She will be missed and remembered. I took several of her classes. Her blouse class was eye opening for me. I know the wonderful memories of her will be shared for years to come.

Over the last two years I took seven classes with Shannon through Patternreview. Through her advice and expertise, she showed me through a door into a new world for me, one that is giving me much satisfaction. Her classes showcased her immense sewing knowledge, but also her great patience and grace in sharing that knowledge. I live 10,000 miles away in Australia, our physical paths never crossed, but I owe her much. Deepest sympathy to her friends and family

Sweet, sweet Shannon. I learned so much from you. Just noted on your website - the idea of building skills instead of just doing projects. I will miss your courses and send condolences to all of your loved ones.

I took, what was Shannon's last, Beginning Sewing 101 class. I think I can speak for the whole class at how amazed we were in her strength, courage, not to mention, her willingness to continue to teach us through what was probably a very challenging time for her and her family. I send my thoughts and prayers to her family at this time, and thank Shannon for her teachings of sewing, but also of living. Paddy K

I am so sad when a member of our family leaves us to go home to be with the Father. Sad for us who are still here....happy for her journey back to the light. I learned so much from her in one lesson than I ever learned in my life. Being a nurse I have been with many people who pass on and they are usually very peaceful when the time comes to cross over. I send you love Shannon. You are in my heart. Patsy Robertson

It is an incredibly dark day. Shannon was a profound influence on my sewing and fitting over the last 4-5 years, and her presence will be greatly missed. She always went above and beyond the call of duty to help others. She is truly a sewing great that will be missed so much by so many people.

How sad it is to lose such a special woman who loved to share her incredible sewing knowledge and talent. Given that she loved to teach, it would be wonderful to honour her memory with a scholarship or similar for a fashion student, or something permanent in that vein. May her family draw strength at their time of great sorrow, knowing all the lives she touched with her teachings, that we will carry with us, and perhaps touch the lives of others by sharing our sewing talents. It's remarkable that those who sew love to share, and Shannon will always be an inspiration.

As painful as it is to lose someone, I remember when my sister was battling what sounded like the same cancer. As I felt when my beloved sissy passed, I was very grateful to the Universe that she was no longer suffering. For suffer she did. I didn't know Shannon; I became involved in the big world of sewing too late. But I'm grateful that Shannon's suffering is finished.

It is with sadness and tears that I mourn Shannon's passing. She will be missed. I always rushed to sign up for her classes. She had such a wealth of wisdom. Such a willingness to share that wisdom and knowledge of sewing. I feel I have lost the best sewing buddy a sewist could ever have.
