BELLADONNA by Eve Kovacs
The inspiration for this ensemble was the burnout silk chiffon fabric used for the skirt. This special fabric was purchased in Beijing and has a lily design in violet-grey tones on a black background. I chose a flowing skirt pattern (Vogue 8083) with a handkerchief hemline, and underlined the chiffon with a periwinkle rayon lining for a subtle shot of color.
The accompanying jacket, a modified version of Vogue 8046, was chosen to complement the lines of the skirt. The jacket fabric is a black silk gazar. The jacket is embellished with embroidery and quilting. The embroidery designs and colors were chosen to complement the lily print in the skirt. Several small embroideries with an Art Nouveau theme were combined in software to create the large panels of embroidery on the hemline, upper front and back and sleeves of the jacket. The jacket background is free-motion echo quilted, following the shape of the embroidery designs to provide a subtle all-over texture.
The corset top is made from a periwinkle silk seersucker using a modified version of Vogue 7733. Both sides of the fabric are used in various parts of the corset. The panels of the corset are grid quilted in two different patterns for added interest. The corset is finished with piping, lacing and handkerchief ruffles on the sleeves.
The purse is an original design and reflects the lily theme of the ensemble by resembling an open flower. The purse is embroidered, quilted and lined with the periwinkle silk used for the corset.
