Progress Report for MariannaSew2Pro
Contest: Sewing For Children     Managed By: velosewer

Photo Pattern Used Points Items Made Yardage Used Description Last Updated
1 Japanese Pattern Books:Dress Coat Pattern O (Dresses) 1 1.000 1.700 A button-down, flannel "Dress Coat" with pleats on the back and front. This is my daughter's favourite garment from Akiko Mano's book of patterns "Fashionable Clothes Girls Like". We call it her Playdress: we decided jeans aren't where it's at when it comes to playing in comfort, as they tend to be cut skinny and are uncomfortable when sitting on the floor.

Akiko Mano's book is available in Japanese or French. I have the French version but as I don't speak the language well, the instructions were a little tricky. I got by fine with the help of Google Translate and the diagrams.

The lack of a collar makes this a quick and easy make, though a beginner might wish to invest a little time in practising buttonholes.

My daughter absolutely insisted that I used a fabric just like in the book. I didn't find an exact colour match but came close enough with a black and white wool blend flannel that feels adorably soft and is very cosy when worn over a shirt and tights.

2 Self Drafted Pattern:Cossack Hat (Accessories) 1 1.000 0.300 Cossack Hats are in the shops and worn on the high street a lot, but the fur is never quite as nice as the one I had left from making my daughter's coat a year ago.

To create the pattern, I had to revisit a much forgotten maths lesson on establishing diameter and radius on the basis of circumference via Pi!
The first attempt was too tight: I hadn't realized that this kind of luxury faux fur when on the double is much thicker on the outside than the inside. The second version is spot on: very Doctor Zhivago/Anna Karenina. The hat when worn with the coat at our local mall drew gasps of admiration from the most cynical-looking teenage girls!!
