Thanks for pointing us AWAY from this DUD.

Thanks for your review. The only bobbin winder that works with different brands of machines is the Simplicity Deluxe model. It comes with 4 different bobbin winder spindels that can be changed and has a speed control.

sew2006 - can you imagine though - spending 100 on that bobbin winder?! That's the price for the Deluxe. May as well buy a bottom line sewing machine and use it to wind your bobbins. :) Thanks for the heads up too!

Made me smile because that another reason I bought my $99 machine- as an extra bobbin winder and thread holder in tandem with my serger. I save buying thread cones if i wind the bobbins.

thank you I appreciate the heads up.

Good review Mufffet!

I was told that Viking bobbins don't work on the side-winder either.

Apparently if you put your Viking bobbins on upside down on the Side Winder - it works. I have no experience with it though, but I have seen this in print several times.

I totally agree...mine broke and I didn't use it much at all...too bad I had lost the sales receipt, I would have returned it for sure!

you saved me from making a bad purchase. I have a Viking#1

So, forgive me if this sounds ignorant, but does it harm your "real" machine to simply wind bobbins on it? I've always wondered what the purpose of a dedicated bobbin winder would be. Thanks, Tina in San Diego
1/29/13 9:24 PM
Tina, no it probably won't hurt the machine, but when you do a quilt it is nice to quickly wind off three bobbins or so and have them there - and I guess I was attracted to the "gadget-ness" of this useless thing. -=8( FOILED AGAIN. Sigh.

Hey Mufffet...I also love to collect gadgets...too bad this one was a "lemon." I don't know why, but sometimes the bobbin winder on my sewing machine does not wind evenly...that is why I thought this one would be a good purchase...oh well...live & learn : (

Mufffet...I feel your pain. I returned the one purchased. I use an old White sm to wind bobbins if my sm is not doing it it's best...which is rarely. I also find if I loop the thread around the bobbin stem it will produce a perfectly wound bobbin...

Per my comment on the bottom line sewing machine to wind bobbins - I acquired a Kenmore Mini Ultra and it winds a perfect Janome bobbin. So I can run off several before stating a project. :) It's a 3/4 machine, and I got it previously owned. Otherwise I would use my mechanical Elna, but it is too big to sit quietly in a smaller space. :) In addition I can do a really nice 4 step buttonhole on the Mini Ultra. As to bobbins winding unevenly - that is such a global problem in so many of today's machines...amazing.
