What is this notion used for? This is a nonwoven "fabric" with a 1cm grid printed on. It's intended to help with fitting patterns. You can draw on it and sew it. There are two 140x110cm pieces per packet (actually, they're a little bigger; that's just the size of the printed grid).

It's a similar idea to Kwik-Trace or, I assume, Pellon Tru-Grid, though I haven't tried the latter.

It says on the back that it can also be used for helping cut out pieces for quilting, and doesn't need to be removed. I'm not a quilter so I have no comment on that.

Did you get your money's worth after the purchase? Yes. I've used it to draft patterns directly onto, and it's very convenient for keeping everything square. It has a sort of papery texture that doesn't stretch when you draw on it. Pencil and ballpoint pen didn't bleed through for me, but other types of pens or markers probably would.

I've found the grid to be more accurately printed than it seemed to be on Kwik-Trace (which has a 1" dot grid, at least the kind I bought in the US). Do test your tape measures/rulers against it, though.

A downside is that because it behaves somewhat more like paper than some other similar products, it WILL tear if you make a test garment that has very little ease or is hard to get on and off. If you're making a fitting shell, I would recommend using a very long zipper, never trying to put it on over your head, and staystitching necklines and armholes.

Because it's fairly stiff, it's not useful for testing anything you intend to sew in fabric with much drape, and it's kind of annoying to deal with when you're sewing it. The main advantage IMO is that you can draft right on it, test your pattern, and it doesn't seem to stretch or distort in the process, aside from the possible tearing problem.

Depending on the store it can be cheaper than muslin, though you don't get all that much per envelope. One sheet was enough for me to make a sleeveless, straight, knee-length dress with a little space left over to the side -- short sleeves might have fit sideways, but I will have to cut into the other sheet if I want to test a long sleeve. On the plus side, folded neatly in the envelope it doesn't seem to take the space that 2.2m of muslin would.

Is this notion easily available? It is in Germany, but I don't know about anywhere else, unfortunately. At the risk of frustrating readers, here's what it looks like on the German Burda site (it isn't on the American one), and on the H.A. Kidd site (not an online store, but maybe this means it's readily available in Canada). General NAYY and of course there may be other sources I don't know about. Maybe it isn't sold in the US because it's in cm?

If it can't be found in North America then you might go with the Kwik-Trace or Tru-Grid instead. I do like the Kwik-Trace better in that it's stronger and not as stiff, although it doesn't seem nearly as easy to write on; again, I haven't ever tried Tru-Grid.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes, for a specific purpose: if you're actually drafting a pattern from scratch, from (metric) measurements, it can save time. I wouldn't recommend it for anything meant to be either loose and drapey or skin-tight.
