This is my first cutting mat. I purchased it to go along with my first rotary cutter. The mat is the perfect size for me right now. I will be moving from Japan to the US in a few months and this mat folds up and will fit perfectly in my suitcase. I wont have to wait months for it to arrive with our household goods.

Did you get your money's worth after the purchase? This is the first time I have seen a cutting mat locally. I didn't know what a good price for this mat was until after I brought it home and found the same mat on Amazon.com for almost double the price and then I would have to also pay for shipping. I would say I got a great deal on this mat but I would love it even if I had to pay more.

Is this notion easily available? I believe this item is easily available in the US at stores such as Joann's. I did a google search and found this mat and many other sizes available at online retailers.

Would you recommend it to others? I do recommend this mat. The mat size is 18" x 24" with 17" x 23" grid marked on the face. It folds up for storage or travel. It is perfect for smaller projects like purses, placemats, baby items, etc.

The only problem I have is that there is an odd smell coming from the mat. I'm not sure if this is a problem that came from the store or if the mat is supposed to smell weird. Only the cutting side smells.

Beth Pierce 9/2/09 I've had the same problem with the smell, and there have been others here too with the same issue. It will go away eventually; the more you keep it open, the sooner it goes away. It's because of the plastic on the cutting side; Sterlite plastic boxes do the same to me. Also, this mat can come apart with use. And you will get a "speed bump" where the crease is when the mat is folded out. What I mean by a "speed bump" is that the fabric won't be cut there, so watch for it when you are cutting strips.

Gloria W 9/3/09 Rotary cutters are great for cutting out patterns pieces in slippery fabrics like charmeuse. You don't have to worry about the fabric slithering away from your scissors. You'll probably be ready to upgrade to a larger mat in no time. ;-)

Claire e. 9/3/09 It's good to know that a foldable cutting mat exists. I have a few that don't fold, and one in particular did have the "weird" odor. It's disappeared with time.

Mufffet 9/8/09 Yes, weird smell goes away...but wouldn't you think they would see that this is a deterent to purchase and do something about it? Oh well, I LOVE my Olfa mat and I have had it at least 16 years now and it look like new! But I was looking at Fiskars mats Saturday at Joanns and they have some pretty colors now! I am currently in love with lime green again...and there are Fiskars scissors that color as well. OH - and I hope your move goes smoothly - I know that drill very well. And be sure and get whatever you love that reflects culture in your far away land because years later you will treasure those things. :) For example - a set of Shi-Shi dogs for each child!
