What is this notion used for?
The cards are used to estimate the amount of fabric needed to make various garments. Use them to snatch a great deal or get enough of (but not too much) of that oh-so-perfect fabric that you can't walk away from!
Is this notion easily available?
Yes - order it from www.gwynhug.com
Would you recommend it to others?
Yes!!
Like many other sewers, I have a chronic "I need this fabric now" problem, and the cards are fantastic for figuring out how much to buy. I have this problem both online and in the store, and the cards are perfect for my purse, so I always have them with me (whether browsing online at home or at a coffee shop, or when I find myself in one of my favorite fabric stores).
The cards are based on over 2000 patterns, so I now the data is both accurate and likely to be representative of a pattern I'd probably make (because of the large sample size used to make the cards). They are easy to read and include the variety of sizes I wear (and many others!).
I use the picture on the back first to visualize the type of garment I'd like to make with the fabric I'm drooling over (e.g., a flow-y blouse or a tank top, in the case of tops), then flip to the size chart (both garment and bolt sizes) to pick the yardage I need for that type of garment in my size, knowing that I'm getting enough given the bolt size this gorgeous fabric is wrapped.
The cards come in both US (yards, inches) and metric measurements; I use the US.
Definitely a must-have for the sewer who has a chronic stash-growing problem!
:-)

This is great! I had never heard of this before, and sort of always guessed. After a lot of years you get pretty good, but when I mess up it is usually in getting too little fabric and that's a bad thing...thanks for this! |

Thank you so much for this review!! I too had never heard about this before & generally figured 3 yds is good for just about anything (except a sheath dress!). I'm going to get one for me & mom for Christmas. |

Thanks for enabling me to buy one of these. The only downside is that buyers need to use PayPal accounts. |

Actually, it goes through the paypal website, but you can just use your credit card and not open a paypal account. |

Wow, I didn't know about this product and you have enabled me to add to my sewing stuff!! Sounds like a great product and so helpful as I never have my pattern available in my head when I find fabric I want/need!
Thanks for sharing. |

Thanks for the info. I had no idea these existed. I carry a hand written beat up piece of paper in my purse with a list of my patterns and their yardage. This seems like a much neater alternative. I must get one today. |
