When I was at the International Quilt Festival in Houston on the 17th, I was particularly interested in looking at the Sew-Ezi portable sewing table. I'd seen it in magazines and it looked neat. My L-shaped big sewing cabinet is in my bedroom and, like others, I like to work where the action is, which in my case is in the den. However, I didn't want something permanently set up there.

I would love to see a review of the Sew-Ezi from any members who have one. I got a demonstration from the ladies at their booth; they had some big Janome model on it. My problem was that Horn also had a large booth there and I saw this folding table; it's on their website. Whereas the Sew-Ezi was made so that a machine would sit inside with the proper insert, this Horn has a swinging and rising section on one end that swings up to meet the machine surface, or can simply be used as a flat surface. The Sew-Ezi weighs about half what the Horn does, and it has rollers on one end to roll it out of the way, along with a neat cover that slides over the table for transport. The Horn doesn't have that, either.

So why did I get the Horn? Stability. Because I do freehand embroidery, my machines often get going at top speed for several minutes at a time. The machines with the oscillating bobbins can set up quite a vibration. I have a couple of folding conference tables in my study, the kind that schools and churches use. They really aren't suitable for my work as they are too flexible on the surface. The Sew-Ezi felt quite stable, but take a look at the legs on it as opposed to the Horn. The legs on the Horn are much more substantial. To transport it, the legs are folded inward and the swing surface is brought flat, and one simply hefts it. For either table, one buys the suitable insert for one's machine, and of course it is possible to buy more than one.

The final determiner was price. The Horn listed at $299 but I bought the demo at the show for $169. The insert arrived a week later shipped separately. The Sew-Ezi was still $249.

I have used it for a week, many hours, and it has been very stable. I am just clumsy enough to tump an ironing board over if I am not careful, but the design of the legs on this table would make that quite difficult. The table does come in two wood-like finishes, but my show demo is in white which suits me to a tee.

Again, if others out there have a Sew-Ezi I would be delighted to hear how they like it.

Rebecca Szetela 11/2/09 Thanks for another detailed and helpful review. We have been tossing around ideas for a moveable table for sewing machines and sergers and this one is very interesting.

j222b 11/2/09 Nice review. I'll look into this. I'd love to be floating sewist, some days in one room and some days in another room.
