As a person new to sewing, I got a lot of recommendations on what type of fabrics to use. Of course, I had no clue about the difference between lawn, poplin, and voile! I just knew that I wanted cotton. Forget about shopping online when you don't know these things.
I came across this book, and it became a must have book for my collection. It is a 223 page paperback (with a nice, firm cover) that really gives a lot of information on each type of fabric including a clear photo of each type of fabric.
It is broken down first into wovens, knits, specialty, blended and patterned. Within each of those sections, it breaks down into categories like this:
Each fabric has a good description of what it is often used for, properties of the fabric (including characteristics of the weave, weight, and any special considerations), how to work with it (including recommended type/size of needle, thread, and stitch length), and how to care for the fabric.
I think this book will be a great permanent reference book for anybody that sews. Even if you have been sewing for many years, I would bet that there are fabrics that you don't use frequently.
I don't reference this book on a daily or even weekly basis, but it is exceptional when I need it. If I could have only 5 books, this would be one of them.
