  • Description: A heavy, drapey fabric that has a matte crepe finish on eone side and satin finish othe other. Both sides of the fabric an be used and/or both sides alternated in a garment
Tips: Crepe back satin is widely used in bridal and formalwear so its available in both silk and polyester in many colors. When choosing a synthetic look for heavy weight, deep color and good drape. Silk will be about 35% more expensive than synthetic. The satin side will show press marks in synthetic as well as silk so a preass cloth is recommended. Crepe back satin in silk and poly can be prewashed although washing will change the hand of the fabric quite a bit. Silk will shrink, poly will not.
Techniques: Crepe back satin ravels easily and must either be lined or the seams finished cleanly in a unlined garment. Seam finishes inlcude: serged, french seamed, Hong Kong seam, seam binding or lace binding. Depending on the fabric weight a 8/12 or 9/14 needle can be used.
Recommended Sources: Gorgeous Fabrics (both), Fabric.com (both though mostly poly), Thai Silks (silk only), Jo-Ann's (poly only)

Rainspa 9/7/09 Thank you for the info. Well done! Is this fabric just poly (or silk) and the weave causes the crepe on one side? BTW everybody else may know this but how can one test for silk vs. poly before you buy?
