| I'm writing a review for the embelishment contest.
This is a figure skating dress of my own leotard pattern and a medium swirly skirt applied on top. If you wanted to use a commercial pattern it would be closest to Kwik Sew (because we all love Kwik Sew) 3508 or 3164. Those patterns use separate bodice and panty pieces, I make a leotard and go from there. Perhaps KwikSew 2678.
All of Kwik sew is easy and has good instructions.
What's different about this leotard is that it's made of stretch velvet, and then its lined, not with swimsuit lining in the front which is typical, it's lined with 4 way stretch polar fleece. This is for a daughter of a friend of mine who is three and gets cold. I think of it as putting the jacket on the inside of the dress.
Because I sew my skirts on top, I treated the lining and fashion fabric as one together. I have different technique for bathing suits where I let the lining ride freely, but that would be another review next time I make a bathing suit
So, dress is done, here's the fun part. I'd seen this on something else and wanted to try it. I took a piece of holographic lycra (really expensive, don't ask) and ironed a piece of Heat n Bond to it. The fabric survived and then I went over to the High School where they have an Accucut machine and picked a small template of maple leaves and punched it out. photo I now had lilittle iron-ons
I laid them out on the skirt pieces and then ironed using a Teflon Sheet overtop. this is important because iron marks will show on the stretch velvet if you don't.
Some of them didn't stick that well, I over ironed so I, used a bit of glue. I liked the result, because the motifs were small and the glue is a bit stretchy and the fabrics certainly were, they didn't peel off when I yanked on the fabric, and indeed I did yank on the fabric.
I made up the dress, and then individually added a few motifs up the bodice and threw on some rhinestones, because uh, what's a skating dress without rhinestones? photo
So I did learn that if I ironed the Heat and Bond onto the embellishment fabric too much, the backing glue turns shiny and the instructions warn of that. The shiny ones dont fix that well to the fashion fabric. I like how this turned out and hope my friend's daughter does too! photo of the leaves down the side
I will use this technique again. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. Membership is free. if you are not a member, please Sign-up now! |
