| Pattern Description:
From the Hot Patterns website:
You’ll be living in this fabulously cosy Cardigan-Jacket from the first hint of Fall right through to Spring! This is designed for heavy knits with just a little stretch, so make it in stable sweatshirting, firm sweater or double knits or even fleece (yes, fleece!) Unlined, cropped single breast Jacket has a gentle A-line shape and a classic collar & rever. Jacket features front & back yokes, vertical seaming on the front & back, and optional topstitching. Jacket front has faux pocket flaps at the yoke and vertical seam pockets, and finishes at the high hip; sleeves have an overarm seam with button vent and are elbow length. Jacket and sleeve hems are finished with a deep stitched hem.
Pattern Sizing:
All sizes (6-26) in one package. I cut the size 14. This is the size I normally start with in tops.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes! It absolutely does- pattern model aside
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I found them very easy to follow. That said, others did not. I have some of the original Hot Patterns styles that have no illustrations. Those were a bit hard to follow. I just looked at the illustrations and I was fine until the collar-then I read. I was going to do my own thing with the collar application and I'm glad that I stopped and read. This was a little different but not that difficult.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Truth be told, who doesn't like the feel of cozy sweats in the fall and winter. This affords the advantage of style to you sweats. 3/4 sleeves are good with me. But I also loved Stacy Sews version with long sleeves. Stacy's review made me buy the pattern. It really shows the potential.
lbrungade version in Ponte also shows another side to this versatile pattern.
I had already completed my version but this morning twinkle72 reviewed her version.
Nothing I disliked about this one.
Fabric Used:
100% Organic Cotton sweat shirting. I picked this up at Rose City Textiles on my shopping trip to Portland about a month ago. It's so lux for sweats! I used the wrong side for the top collar, the facing and the pockets
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Here's where it gets fun right? When we sew we get intimately aquainted with our body type We know what works best.
I did make a FBA even though this is loose fitting garment. You can see it here. I hate it when the front is shorter than the back. So even though I did not need that much room around (about an inch or so) I did need some length. I added to each of the front sections to accomodate width from the FBA. And, don't forget to add to the facing piece if you do a FBA.
I also needed some extra room in the sleeve bicep area. This is a two piece sleeve. I used the technique in Fit for Real People and altered each of the two pieces to make them each 1/2" wider. I also added 2" of length. It's still a 3/4 length sleeve it just doesn't hit in the fold of my elbow.
I added 1 1/2' of length. It's a little more user friendly on my hips.
I used mystery brand metallic thread for the topstitching. I used a 90 mettalic needle and I used embroidery bobbin thread.
I stabilized the shoulder seam and the pocket seams with iron on stay tape.
I serge finished the interior.
On the vertical pockets: The short end at the bottom is not attached to the jacket. I had a little gaping so I sewed it down over the topstitching.
The buttonholes: I love modern technology but when it comes to machine buttonholes on heavy fabric it's really hard to beat the vintage machine attachment. Nancy2001 had a nice review here on her buttonhole station. I did mine on my Singer 301 straight stitch machine with an old "in the green box" attachment.
The buttons are vintage repurposed off a 1940's Navy pea coat. The coat was dead but ohhhh those buttons! Anchors away!
jacket back
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes on both accounts. I have plans to make a long sleeve version for the winter. I think it's a fun project and a very stylish addition to my wardrobe. There are enough reviews here on PR on this one to help most advanced beginners through the bumpy parts.
Conclusion:
I absolutely love this jacket pattern!!!!! I think you might too
