| This is a pattern for a swing coat, made from boiled or double faced wool. It has raglan sleeves with a dart at the top, a cut-on lapel, and a one-piece collar with a stand applied at the bottom for support. It is unlined and the seams are sewn mostly on the outside, pressed open and trimmed. It comes in sizes 34- 52.
I made size 50 with no alterations. I used a Double Faced Wool Melton from fabric.com. They only had *kiddie* colors in stock, I would have loved to see a brown or black or gray, but I digress.
I added some patch pockets, which I interfaced with a fusible knit. I got the placement off particularly on one side, so I'm going to reposition one or both of them. I tried to level them with the grain line up the center of the pattern piece (the pieces are cut on grain through the center) but somehow it didn't translate. I recommend waiting until the end to put your pockets on, since the pattern doesn't have pockets, to make sure you get a correct and level placement.
I couldn't find any matching velvet ribbon for my fabric, so I used a strip of grosgrain ribbon to cover the neckline seam allowances. You can also see how I applied the collar stand on the photo - the directions weren't super clear on this. I topstitched it onto the wrong side of the collar with the collar stand right side out.
The hardest thing about this coat is remembering to sew it Wrong Sides Together. I used some chalk to mark the wrong side of each piece after I cut them, which I highly recommend (or use a safety pin or something). Also, note that the pattern drawing itself has the seam allowances added, so make sure you refer to it when tracing your pattern. This was very helpful because this garment isn't sewn with the typical seam and hem allowances.
The fit is very roomy, which is typical for a coat, where it's assumed that you're wearing bulky garments underneath. It's big on me, but I don't think it's worth adjusting. I'll have to wear it getting in and out of the car and see if it bugs me. Still a little warm here for a coat, but I'll be wearing it more in the coming months.
I'm excited to have the coat because I've needed something to wear with This Scarf for a long time.
In sum, it's a very easy and quick project, definitely satisfying for a beginning sewer. Take your time with cutting and sewing and everything will come out great, you'll have a stunning piece of work. | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews.
