| Pattern Description:
Semi-fitted slightly A-line dress (without side seams) has jewel neckline and loose front inset with skirt front gathered to stay. Short sleeves or sleeveless. Button, buttonhole and topstitch trim.
Pattern Sizing:
Single-size - 10 (32 1/2 bust)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Not nearly as elegant. And I still don't know how the dress on the pattern envelope had such detail - it's like it was made from thick material that allowed the topstitching to really sink in and be noticeable. Mine's just sort of flat - blink and you'd miss the detail.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes. The front side seams with the insertion of the front overlay piece was tricky - the instructions weren't lacking but it was just an unusual procedure.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It's an interesting design - didn't come out as well in real life, though. It might help to be a tiny size-8 model, as always...
Fabric Used:
A light crepe, underlined with silk habutai.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Well, I'm about an inch bigger in the bust than the measurements for this pattern, so I laboriously added an inch by way of adding half an inch to both the back piece and to all the front pieces involved - quite an undertaking for the front, there was a lot of bits affected. And I eventually got it to the point of trying it on, only to find it looked like a maternity dress - hung off me like a tent. Can't stand it when I get clever and go to great lengths to make a pattern fit me, only to find I should have left well enough alone! (Oh, and a muslin might have helped.)
I couldn't do much about the front inset bits, so took the back and front side seams in as much as I could (there were no true side seams). It's okayish, but I feel the front overlay bit doesn't fit as neatly as it would have if I hadn't messed with it. I also positioned the buttons a bit wider to get the lower edge of the front overlay to sit a bit more snugly, but this doesn't make for such a clean seamline above it, where the front overlay is incorporated into the front side seam.
If I were to do it again, I'd also lengthen the front overlay pieces by a good couple of inches, to have the lower edge closer to my waist. As it is, it ends just under the bust, and the gathered dress front beneath makes it look as though it really could be used as an early-maternity dress - not quite what I'm looking for at this point.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I probably wouldn't sew it again - or I might in the fullness of time, if I come across a fabric with more loft to carry the detail better. And if others are interested in having a go at it ... do make a toile!
Conclusion:
The making of this was fun - I like the challenge of these different vintage patterns. It didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but that wasn't the pattern's fault.

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | CarolynGM | 11/3/09 | I remember this pattern. A friend made it, and it looked so terrific that I decided to give Vogue patterns a try. | | * * * | | Trephas2003 | 11/3/09 | It looks beautiful! | | * * * | | no7262 | 11/3/09 | It does look very nice! And you can tell that a lot of work went into it! Don't be so hard on yourself! Nora :) | | * * * | | Peter in NYC | 11/3/09 | Beautiful. The pattern envelope picture looks like a knit -- definitely something thicker, hence the more visible topstitching. Plus a bright color may have something to do with it. I love your version though! | | * * * | | Marji | 11/3/09 | It looks very elegant on your dressform.
I have this pattern and have long had plans to make it. Thanks for your review. I've always seen this, in my minds eye, in a wool double knit. I think it would help with the heft needed at the bib to highlight the topstitching, and it could be made without much wearing ease in order to reduce the potential maternity look.
I appreciate the information about the excess wearing ease negating the necessity of your bust alterations. Good information to have. I agree, a muslin (toile) is a must for this design.
I hope you are able to enjoy wearing it. | | * * * | | Elona | 11/3/09 | How nice to see a review of this intriguing old pattern. I've never seen it made up before. You know, it does look remarkably like the photo, I think. But I agree that it would be worthwhile to try it in wool double knit. Back in that period, I made DMIL a lot of Vogues using that fabric, which was easy to find then. As I recall, it was easy to work with, too.
| | * * * | | MaryDB | 11/3/09 | Very elegant dress, nice work. | | * * * | | Puppy | 11/3/09 | It may have been difficult, but "I" think the outcome looks GREAT! And no, no, no, you don't need to be size 8 to look good in it (I was a size 10 when I wore those styles; not any more! Enjoy being size 10 and keep making those cool vintage clothes! | | * * * | | Anne S | 11/3/09 | I love your dress!! I made it back in the 60's for a fashion show at my church. I found the fitting a bit of a task. I needed to add darts to it to make it look ok. Mine was a deep shade of yellow. Thanks for the memories | | * * * | | Linda L | 11/4/09 | Lovely dress! | | * * * | | AnneMarie60 | 11/4/09 | Beautiful dress! | | * * * | | Karine | 11/4/09 | Fabulous dress. I actually like yours better. Very classic. | | * * * | | nicegirl | 11/4/09 | That is fabulous! Sounds like a lot of work, but hopefully as the pain of all that work fades your joy in the dress will increase. | | * * * | | Christas | 11/4/09 | Very classy dress! | | * * * | | senaSews | 11/5/09 | The dress is awesome. Wow, i love it! | | * * * | |
