| Pattern Description:
Misses' Jacket with Front Variations
Pattern Sizing:
4-20. I made the 12, jacket B.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
With my mods, yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It's really more of a "Love/hate"
1. The collar. It's a great collar if you've never done collars before, because it doesn't have a collar stand. But even though the upper collar is larger than the under collar, it didn't roll properly for me and I wound up doing some hand tacking, but that might have been because of my fabric. I really like the shaping of the collar, it's like an oversized Peter Pan collar. (Also there weren't really any instructions on how to sew the larger upper collar to the smaller under collar, which I found annoying).
2. No lining. It's great because it's less fabric, but it uses a LOT of bias tape to finish the edges, which takes time to sew in. Also, sometimes I couldn't use regular double fold bias tape and had to break out the extra wide double fold bias tape. That too may have been because of my fabric. Also, the pattern says you only need 2 pkgs of bias tape but I used almost 3, probably because of my modifications (lengthening the sleeves and bodice).
3. The dropped shoulder sleeves. No need to pucker up, these sleeves are dropped off the shoulder and thus don't need any gathering, basting, etc. Just sew and go!! But because they are dropped-shoulder, there isn't a lot of room there where the arm meets the shoulder.
Not a lot of room with a dropped shoulder (before I added buttons and snaps)
4. The swing-coat styling. Love it in the bodice. I tapered it back some in the sleeves. The sleeves were waaay too wide at the ends, I wound up taking 2 inches out of the circumference of the sleeve ends.
Look at how wide the arms were (before I took two inches off the circumference, and before adding snaps/buttons)
Fabric Used:
Polyester embroidered outerwear fabric from Joann's. It's two layers of polyester with a layer of batting in between, that was pre-embroidered with roses. It's in stores now (fall 2009) at $15 a yard, but I used a 50% off coupon. I used 2.5 yards to make my jacket.

Pattern alterations or an design changes you made:
1. I added pockets! I wore this for 4 days in a row and was going crazy because it didn't have any pockets! So I added them in, using a pants pocket pattern I had from an unrelated New Look pattern. I wound up tacking the bottom of the pocket to the bottom of the coat, so the pocket lining wouldn't stick out.
Here's the interior view of my coat pockets (look at all the bias tape!)
Side view of coat (with my hand in my pocket)
what it looked like before I tacked the pocket down to the bottom of the jacket, if I shoved my hand forcefully into the pocket
2. I added at least 3 inches to the length of the coat. I added a few inches to the sleeves, but I'm not sure how many because I wound up chopping some of the sleeve down.
3. I used 3 buttons and 3 pairs of sew-on snaps Here are the fakeout buttons with snaps
4. Sometimes I used extra-wide double fold bias tape for finishing edges instead of regular size double fold bias tape.
5. I used single fold bias tape for the hem. I'm still not crazy about how that turned out, but I didn't want to lose any of the length of the coat.
6. I added a loop in the back inside of the jacket on the upper facing so I can easily hang it in the locker at the gym.
Here's the loop for hanging up my coat
Here's the back of the jacket (before I added pockets)
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think I will sew the long jacket without sleeves sometime, and wear it like a vest. For that I would go down a size or two, because I won't be wearing it over my regular work clothes (like a shirt and lined jacket).
Conclusion:
Super cute, super fun, and it gets a lot of praise from my coworkers. Go for it!

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | RachelEsq | 11/4/09 | Thanks or the very helpful review. I really like the collar as well. The inside looks great. | | * * * | | Mary Nanna | 11/4/09 | wow - you made a great job of this - the fabric is so lovely and cute, and the inside bias covering gives it a very professional finish - great job! | | * * * | | Rhoda K | 11/4/09 | What a great job on a beautiful jacket! | | * * * | | strasfamily | 11/5/09 | I really love your fabric choice. Great jacket and great review! | | * * * | | sarahb | 11/5/09 | love the collar too, and the fabric is really pretty. Really enjoyed your series of photos showing your process and the different views (although I liked those wide wide sleeves!):-) | | * * * | | EleanorSews | 11/5/09 | Good lokking jacket and the fabric is interesting so it adds to the whole look. The interior shows the time it must have taken. You will never worry about taking your jacket off and showing its insides! Great job! | | * * * | | leeannz | 11/5/09 | yes, wholly bias tape, but it looks much more "off the rack" like that. Great job. | | * * * | | marec | 11/5/09 | This is an absolutely fun looking jacket. Is it warm? It looks so very cozy. | | * * * | | kdburkhardt | 11/5/09 | Thanks so much everyone!
marec: the jacket is warm enough for 50-degree temps. It's not really warm enough for 40-degree temps (but I am cold all the time, so someone warmer than me might be able to tolerate it!) | | * * * | | mhk3boys | 11/6/09 | Your jacket looks really pretty! You did a great job on it! | | * * * | |
