| Pattern Description: Very easy jacket with only 3/4 pattern pieces (more later). Unfinished edges so needs to be made with boiled wool or unfrayable fabric! Pattern Sizing:I made a size Medium (and I usually take a size 16 in a jacket) - it was plenty roomy enough for a thick jumper underneath.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?Yes, although as this was a muslin I didn't do any of the suggested felting pattern on the fabric.
Were the instructions easy to follow?I made this in one evening from start to finish - the instructions only cover two columns on the pattern sheet!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? This jacket turns out very well, can be dressed up or down and looks like a lot more work went into it than really did! The back of the jacket is about 1 1/2 inches longer than the front which is a nice design feature.
Side seam
Instead of a dart to taper the wide sleeves, you actually cut out a dart of material, butt the edges of each side together and join together by using a zigzag stitch or similar - I used a fancy zig zag stitch on my new Pfaff machine which I love experimenting with!
Stitched Dart on sleeve
Fabric Used:Rust/black flecked boiled wool which I bought YEARS ago in Croft Mill in England by mail order for about £3 per metre!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:This pattern has only four pieces - sleeve, back and two separate fronts. However, each front piece is exactly the same - the only reason they give you a left and right is because there are markings for suggested felting patterns which are different on each side. As I intended to make a plain jacket, I just used one front piece and cut it out on the fabric doubled to give the usual two front pieces of fabric.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?I would definitely recommend this as a quick and easy, yet professional looking jacket!
Conclusion: I am not one for fussing with garments - I like to put them on and not think about it for the rest of the time I'm wearing them! So although this jacket on the pattern shows photos of the lapels draped elegantly in folds, I found it easier to fasten the front of the jacket with a nice sparkly Liz Claiborne brooch which I had purchased on a trip to the US a couple of years ago. I have also worn it with more casual brooches, and prefer not to have the front flapping about!
Now that I know it's a breeze to sew, I'm looking at the many colours of boiled wool available in Craftswoman Fabrics for my next version.....

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | yorkshire lass | 11/4/09 | Oooh, gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. I love this jacket soooo much, the colour, the style, the brooch closure idea. This is so much nicer than the envelope picture and really does look like a more time consuming project than you say it is. Perfect work as always. Now all you have to do is decide how many more and in which colours. | | * * * | | sewtime | 11/4/09 | Very pretty!!! LOVE your jacket! | | * * * | | nicolars | 11/4/09 | Wow, what an elegant jacket! Beautiful work, it is much lovelier than the photo on the envelope. | | * * * | | moushka | 11/4/09 | I totally agree with yorkshire lass: fantastic jacket. What a great reward for such easy sewing. Looks very high end. You should make several more if you can get the right fabric. Closing it with different brooches is a great idea. | | * * * | | lyndle | 11/4/09 | What a great jacket.
