UPDATE:

I'm almost done making a matching jacket for the pants (see review below) with my remaining fabric, using a vintage Simplicity teen blazer pattern (which I guess I'll review separately when I'm finished). I wasn't planning to do this but this morning I just said, Go for it! Here's how things look so far:

Flowered Jacket

If it's done I'll wear it to PR Day in NYC tomorrow! (Bring your sunglasses and some Alka Seltzer.)

Pattern Description:

This is a vintage mens shirt and pants pattern from the early 70s I found during the summer on Etsy. I sewed the shirt once and made jeans loosely based on the pants pattern in August. Now I decided to make a pair of pants that followed the pattern more accurately, with a hook-and-eye waistband and no back pockets.

Pattern Sizing:

The pattern is for a 30" waist. The rise is about 34" but I hemmed them to about 30".

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

The instructions were pretty good, especially in explaining how to insert the zipper.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I like the style of the pants, though I made them straight-legged instead of bell bottomed. It's a pretty easy one-day project.

Fabric Used:

The fabric is a bit of a mystery. I'm guessing it a cotton print, but it's entirely backed by a stabilizer-type interfacing. I found it in a rock-bottom remainder fabric store on 35th St. in NYC, where everything is about $2 a yard. This was $1.50!

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I slimmed down the pants legs since I didn't want flared legs. I took 2 inches out of both the front and back rise -- the latter by taking 2 inches entirely out of the over-sized back yoke.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Yes -- this pattern is easy and adaptable.

Conclusion:

After the excitement of my Little Black Dress contest submission last week and an unplanned visit from my glamorous identical cousin Cathy, I knew I had to throw myself immediately into a new sewing project or I'd get depressed.

I went shopping on Monday for something wacky and fun and found it almost immediately (there's so much far-out fabric in this town) and bought 4 yards-worth. It was this or the Dr. Seuss print -- which I may go back for!

I wanted something I could wear to a happening party, should I ever be invited to one, or even the MTV Video Awards (ditto). I really just wanted to have fun and I did with this unusual pattern and fabric.

You can follow my process here -- complete with gratuitous chihuahua shots.

Thanks for reading!

Tiner W 11/4/09I bought a very small amount of that fabric in another colorway from an Etsy seller--she sold it as Japanese and it was much more than $1.50. Needless to say, I love that fabric! The pants are great.

DaisyEsq 11/4/09The pants are fun! I have to go to 35th street to check out the fabrics.
* * *
Aixoise 11/4/09Great pants (and thanks for the alterations info). Be sure to post pictures of the party(ies). Give the pups a pet for me.

Rhoda K 11/4/09Neat pair of jeans and a great review! . and the beat goes on . . . . Um, by the way - your pattern photo comes up as a ladies dress.

Sewing Joe 11/4/09You get more sewing done in one day that I get done in a couple of months... Another great project!

Nancy K 11/5/09I am assuming that this is a vintage pattern and the nightgown showed up for that number! Great pants and buying something that avant garde for men would be cost prohibitive for most people. The fit is first rate too. Great job. Hope you wear them on Saturday; I think that you said you were coming to PR day?

Peter in NYC 11/5/09THERE'S the word I was thinking of: avant garde. Sounds so much better than wacky. (ha ha) Thank's for the comments everybody and yes, provided it doesn't rain, I will wear them to PR dsy in NYC on Saturday. That or the little black dress!

TracyB 11/5/09Your photo stories are the best. My dogs also like to get on my fabric while I'm trying to cut it out. But they are much bigger and worse than gratuitous; they can be downright discouraging!
* * *
Raye Ann 11/6/09great job, Peter! i love the floral pants. the jeans styling really works for the scale of the print. love it with the sneaks and leather. absolutely fun and fabulous!
* * *
Tiner W 11/6/09I like that jacket a lot. I'd love a trench coat from this fabric!
* * *
elainemay 11/6/09Great pants, great fit! I'm jealous that you found warp-print fabric... I'm always looking for it and can never find it.
* * *
knitmachinequeen 11/6/09Peter I think you should wear the pants and jacket together...it's fabulous and so you!
* * *
lucylal 11/6/09I agree, pants and jacket together. Your friends won't lose you!!!! They look ace!
* * *
LollyVee 11/7/09Pete, that 'suit' is a great fit! You have to wear it together! Elton John would love that suit...if only he had your Bod!!
* * *
voet 11/7/09Another great job, Peter. I disagree about wearing the jacket and pants together--unless, of course, you draw your fashion inspiration from the octogenarian cruiseship crowd. However, separately they are great. I'm just sayin',,,
* * *
Heidi Ho 11/7/09Wild!
* * *
Annette1 11/7/09Now that's what I call a GUTSY suit. I love it! :o)
* * *
fourkid 11/13/09Love the suit - you can really carry that off so well - I think it is your lovely spirit.
* * *
Nancy Anne 11/16/09It's a rather riotous outfit that somehow works. Here in Texas you'd definitely want to wear the pieces separate, but it sounds like they will work together where you like. OUTSTANDING execution of both pieces- You always do such stunning work!
