| Pattern Description:
From the envelope: CHILDREN’S AND GIRLS’ JACKET, TOP AND SKIRT: pullover top has contrast front and hem bands, collar with collar band, patch pocket and side slits
Pattern Sizing:
3-6 (girls)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, however I'm frequently decieved by the linedrawings in McCall's patterns and this was no different. For some reason I can't ever seem to grasp how narrow their shirts are from the line drawings (this is my fault, not their's) and this shirt was really really narrow.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, standard Big 4 instructions. I actually followed them fairly closely for my first version (seen in the photo) because I was curious to see how it would come out straight from the box. I made multiple alterations on my subsequent shirts, somewhat based on what I was using for collars and somewhat because I wanted to experiment with polo shirts.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It was really narrow in the body. I made this for my older DD's Uniform SWAP. She is very thin, she wears about a 4 RTW in width and a 6 RTW in length. I cut this in her normal size in width and added to the length to meet her length size (this is my standard alteration for all her clothes and it works well). This shirt was quite close-fitting on her. If I had made a similarly appropriate size for younder DD, who is quite thick in the chest, I don't think she could have worn it. Something to be aware of. It suited my purposes really well, but that was something of a fluke.
I also didn't like the way the open collar/neck was dragged open even more by the weight of the collar.
Fabric Used:
For this first version I used a previously-worn adult-sized long-sleeve high-quality t-shirt (I'm trying to see how many hypenated words I can use in a row in one sentence). The fabric was quite beefy. I also used some scraps of white seersucker for the ruffle trim on the collar, sleeve hem and hem.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
None on this version that I can remember. I did use the existing hem from the t-shirt instead of hemming the top.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I've made a bunch of variations off this pattern, most notably changing the v-neck collar band to a standard rugby/polo collar.
Conclusion:
This is a cute shirt, although the fit is a little unusal for a Big 4. I like the side-seam shaping that gives it a very girlie feel. Since DD1 has to wear a uniform to school, this is a nice alternative to the more generic androgynous polo shirts from the store.
I'm working on several blog posts showing the other versions I've made using this (and other) patterns if you want to see more photos: Beangirl: The Blog | *LOGIN to add a comment to this review *Only registered members can post comments to the reviews. It's actually nice to hear that a Big 4 child's pattern is on the slim side for once, rather than gi-normous. | | * * * | | Diane333 | 11/7/09 | very nice. I have this pattern and also a very skinny 1st grader. I'll need to make it up. THank you. | | * * * | | Elke | 11/7/09 | Very cute polo, especially the white one! | | * * * | |
