| Pattern Description: Slightly flared pants in two lengths has contour waistband with carriers, button and buttonhole closure or hook and eye closure, front fly, side front pockets and back patch pockets, yoke back and stitched hems.
Pattern Sizing: 6-22, I sewed a 12.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, except for changes I made

Were the instructions easy to follow? They were. In fact, I think this may be the best fly zip installation I've seen. Naturally, I did it my own way and then looked at the instructions, but next time I'm trying it their way!
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I was looking for a basic wide leg jean for my first attempt at jeans and this fit the bill. It features a contour waistband, which makes for an excellent fit in the waist. There were a couple of dislikes, though. The pattern instructs you to ease the pant into the waistband, which I can't really see working well on heavy denim. Also, the belt carriers and waistband construction are not at all jeans-style.
Fabric Used: Stretch denim from Walmart (This was a rough draft!)
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The only alteration I needed for fit was to pinch a full inch at center back to eliminate the waistband gap. This meant that I didn't have any extra fabric to ease into the waistband, which I think was a good thing! I also did the topstitching a bit differently than instructed, mostly just to follow the topstitching on my favorite pair of RTW jeans. I constructed the waistband in a more jeans style. The pattern instructed you to sandwich the upper end of the belt carriers between the waistband and facing and then to slipstitch the waistband facing down, but I've never seen that treatment on RTW jeans! I left the carriers out of the upper waistband seam and topstitched the waistband facing down, then bartacked the upper end of the carrier. I also elected to do a button/buttonhole closure although the "jeans" style view calls for a hook and bar. I used a dungaree button. How sweet are those? No sewing, just snap it on! I think another nice touch would be a couple of rivets at the pocket corners.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I really like this pattern, but I'm not sure I will sew it again. It has a fairly high waist (just below the belly button). I really like this style in theory, but I am quite short waisted and so it isn't the most flattering jeans style on me. I really recommend this pattern though. The instructions are good - particularly for the fly - and it is a very simple, but still fun, style.
Conclusion: I rated this pattern as recommend with mods, not because I think the pattern itself needs help, but because if you want a RTW jeans look you do need to make a few changes, as I did. This would be a fabulous pattern for some beautiful wide leg slacks and it sure makes a lovely pair of comfortable jeans. | Buy this pattern for $16.95 Add to Bag |
