| Pattern Description: Loose fitting raglan sleeve coats with single welt pockets. I've had this pattern for over 5 years. 2009 seems to be the year for me for trying my aged patterns Unfortunately as expected this pattern is no longer in print but I decided to write a review anyway in the hope that it may help someone else out there who has this in their stash. After all I can't be the only pattern-o-holic around here. I am making View A, the shorter length with two accent buttons which came from Sawyer Brook.
I am going to start this as a Work in Progress review so I can track my progress as I sew this. This will help me focus as well. I did that in my last coat review and it was a lot of fun.
WIP NOTES 11/09/09 (11:24PM): So I did make some progress today. I cut out all my wool pieces. The fabric has stretch along the grain so I decided to cut on the cross grain. I hope that works out. Actually I sort of starting freaking out when I made my first cut, thinking that maybe I should find some other fabric but then I thought - lets experiment. Maybe it won't be perfect but it'll still be a coat I made
I also realized that I missed cutting one sleeve from the lining last night and before the panic set in, I saw I had just enough to cut that sleeve so all is well.
Since the coat is pretty thick and fuzzy, I am going to mark the facing, the closures and other markings tomorrow with silk thread. I started to do that today but it's a fair amount of work. So baby steps.
But I feel good, the fabric is put away, the counter is clean and the pieces are all cut. Seriously in sewing, the time spent at the sewing machine is only 30% of the total time it takes to make a garment. This feels like a blog entry doesn't it?
My goal for tomorrow is to experiment with a few interfacings I have, to cut them out and fuse to the coat pieces. Also finish thread tracing.
11/09/09: So this weekend I didn't make as much progress as I thought I would. I measured the length of some of my coats and decided that I need to shorten by 2 inches. So I took half inch from the upper chest, half from the waist and one inch from the body. Since there are separate pieces for lining in this coat, that took a while.
I then started to press the lining to cut it out and realized that I had not prewashed it. Even though the jacket is going to be dry cleaned, I threw the lining in the wash. I think it does have some amount of rayon in it. The lining pieces were cut out last night. I was going to cut out the coat also, but was too tired. You know this coat seemed much more simpler than it really is. The instructions for the button closure make really no sense as of this point
Tonight I plan to cut out the coat pieces and perhaps sew the lining.
11/07/09: I have my fabric, the buttons, the pattern, the interfacing ( I think I am going to use fusible weft, cause that's what I have and I really want to make some progress this weekend ).
Plan for this weekend is to have the fabric pieces cut out and interfaced so I can sew in the evenings all next week. Oh and this includes lining pieces too. I am using Bemberg Rayon for lining.
Pattern Sizing:
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Were the instructions easy to follow?
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Fabric Used:My fabric is a gift from Marsha at Textile Studio from years ago but I have been saving it ever since to make this coat. I want to be able to show her what a nice coat her fabric became. The only thing I am a little concerned about is the lycra in the fabric. There is a fair amount of lycra in the crossgrain. How will that affect the coat? I am not too concerned because some of it will be interfaced but even so it's a loose fitting coat so it shouldnt matter right? I am using the fuzzy side of the fabric as the right side.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | marec | 11/7/09 | Deepika, I'm looking forward to reading each installment. Pretty fabric and buttons. | | * * * | | Re Becca | 11/7/09 | Love the fabric, does it have a touch of lurex in it? I see a hint of sparkle! You should be fine with the stretch, just be careful to not stretch it while you sew. | | * * * | | Barbara V | 11/7/09 | Deepika, I too bought this fabric from Textile Studio a few years back and it sits on my shelf awaiting the right moment to emerge. Your pattern selection is great and I look forward to watching your progress. | | * * * | | sewnsewtoo | 11/7/09 | Beautiful fabric.
