| This was a class project for beginners. We made a simple pillowcase with a header. The students could add piping, a flange strip, rick rack, ribbon or anything decorative we want. The class did a standard size one of 27 x 21 inches. I did a queen size of 37 x 21 inches. We had the choice of a 9 inch or 12 ½ inch header. There were 4 students in this class, and only 1 chose the larger 12 ½ inch header. I made mine with the 9 inch header.
If you do not know what a “header” is, as I had to learn the term, it refers to the green fabric section on my pillowcase. The “body” of the pillowcase is a black floral print. It looked like the teachers example and I was pleased with it. The one I did in class is in the blue family. This one I am reviewing was my MIL’s Christmas present. I made her a set of 2 of them.
I think the instructions are easy to follow. She only forgot the trimming the salvages part. Otherwise she did a very nice job on the instructions. All the seams are enclosed, and the final seams are French seams. It looks very nice when done. I loved the part where she would put the main point in larger bold letters so we could find it easily. Great instructions.
Likes and dislikes. I like the pillowcases well enough. I made them with the length of the case along the lengthwise grain and the circumference of the case on the crosswise grain. For my 3rd set, I want to do a directional print layout and do the length on the cross grain and the circumference on the lengthwise grain. Our pillows are too fluffy to fit in the blue cases I made, so a new layout is needed. Mom’s pillows are not fluffy, so they fit in the cases just fine. Why do I need to change the layout? Our pillows will not easily go in and out of the cases. It is a struggle and I want them to slide in and out easily.
The green fabric is Moda Solid in grass green from Fiddlesticks Quilt Shop. The black floral quilting fabric is Wild Rose from Marti Mitchell. I bought the print from Just For Fun Quilting. I originally bought it for a quilt, but that was too much black to use for a quilt. In a smaller pillowcase, it just shines.
I like doing things like this. I used my new Bernina 630 and it just went though all 10 layers like it was just 2 layers.

These are really nice. Makes me want to make some too. And don't you just love how easily the Bernina's sew though all those layers! I love that too!

I am thinking of changing not only the layout on the next set, but of using the serger as well. Not sure how this will work yet. The idea was to make the layers flatter and eliminate one step somewhere. I still want the cases to be french seamed, so nothing shows. Just not sure how to do it with the serger and the sewing machine. I really love the Bernina, as it just plows though those 10 layers like nothing.

I don't think you can do a french seam properly with a serger. But, this is the way I have learned to do pillowcases. The instructions are on the Crafty Gemini's You Tube channel in case anyone needs to know how to do it. Our Joann's is teaching a pillowcase class, and has one on display. I was really disappointed to see how it was sewn and they used pinking shears to finish the inside!! Yuck! But, yours are very lovely, and done right!

I know I can't do a french seam with the serger. I was not thinking that far ahead. Mainly the first few seams and then finish with a french seam on my Bernina. I was trying to think of a way to reduce some of the bulk where the header joins the body of the case. On the final french seam it is 10 layers thick in that spot.
