Pattern Description:
Misses' Nightgown in two lengths, Pajamas and Robe.
I made the View A sleeveless nightgown which has a buttoned front bodice with a gathered skirt and a gathered ruffle at the hemline.
Pattern Sizing:
The pattern can be purchased in 2 size ranges: XS/S/M or M/X/XL. Note that M(edium) is included in both size range groupings.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes. I did make some minor modifications, but the basic structure is the same.
Do note that the ruffle is not as gathered as the illustration on the pattern envelope indicates. If you want a fuller gather, you will need to increase the width of the ruffle piece, making it wider so there will be more fabric to gather into the ruffle.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The skirt/ruffle portion are super easy. The bodice might require some headscratching. It can be done but it is a little tricky.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like all the options available.
I think what I don't like is the pattern is boxier than the illustration would indicate (for the nightgown). Also, in general, I have come to mistrust pattern images with only illustrations versus photographs. Sometimes they get it right, but too often they get it wrong and so I take illustrations with a grain of salt.
But I do like this pattern in spite of those minor problems.
Fabric Used:
cotton woven from JAF, most likely redtag clearance
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Changes to pattern front include:
The colored lines indicate 1) blue--I lowered the sleeve, opening up the armhole; 2) green--forward shoulder adjustment; 3) yellow--narrow shoulder adjustment. I also did a slight sloping shoulder adjustment.
Changes to pattern back include forward shoulder, sloping shoulder, narrow shoulder, and opening up the armhole.
The armhole on this pattern has been too small for 3 individuals I have sewn the gown for. I feel it really is not large enough for comfort in sleepwear.
I added a second ruffle at the hemline.
I added lace to the lower edges of the two ruffles.
I also lined the bodice since the fabric is a thin cotton.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I would sew it again. I do recommend it, but not for beginners. The neckline/front placket facing is too tricky. But prove me wrong and have a go at it if you must. I don't mind being wrong.
Conclusion:
This is a good reliable pattern but there is some trickiness to getting the neck/front facing right. The armhole will probably be too small for most people to comfortably use as sleepwear. The pattern does tend to be a bit boxy and the ruffle won't be as full as illustrated. Making the ruffle fuller will probably increase your satisfaction with the gown.
I think it's a good pattern overall.
