|Pattern Description: |
Semi-fitted jackets are tunic length at back with raglan sleeves in short or three quarter length, stitched, shaped hem draping shorter in front. Patch pockets, collar, lapel.
16-22. It is only semi-fitted across the shoulder, but the rest is loose-fitting. I look a bit matronly from the side in it, but since I do actually have a matronly figure I'm not going to fuss about that.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
The pockets (which are long and go right round the body) are not intended to lie flat, but apart from that it does look like the picture. I made view D with long sleeves.
Pictures are here.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes. It is rated as a very easy jacket.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the unusual collar-lapel combination...
...but I think the proportions of the lapel and collar pieces are a bit off. A lot of people probably wouldn't notice, but to me it is like a painting that is hanging a bit skew. If I make this again I will make the lapel piece maybe half an inch narrower and shorter and lengthen the collar by an inch or so on each side to bring it lower down on the neck opening.
The lapel piece seems like a great place to show off a large brooch, but my brooches are all a bit small and look lost on it. At first I was worried that the corners of the lapels would get caught in my armpits, but that hasn't happened.
Stable knit, which is one of the recommended fabrics. It was an end of roll piece that I bought about 18 months ago without any specific project in mind.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Graded the shoulder area down a size and added an FBA and forward shoulder for fit.
My fabric is probably a bit thicker than ideal. I compensated for this by topstitching and trimming the seam allowances inside the neck more aggressively than I usually would. I also caught the draping in front with a few stitches to keep it turned out.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think I might make this one again, at some point. I would recommend this pattern.
A nice jacket and a versatile pattern. I made my test garment out of old lightweight curtain fabric in view B (without the pockets, collar or lapel) and it has a completely different character to view D (very elegant B vs funky D). I think you could make this in a lot of different fabrics and get good results.
