|Pattern Description: From the Vogue website: Pullover dress (semi-fitted through bust) has gathered front extending into back collar, side front seams, draped lower side front with pockets, and stitched hems. A: pleat and button trim on pockets. A and C: narrow hem on cap sleeves. |
Also known as the French House Dress. I sewed view a. picture on me, sorry about coat rack!
Pattern Sizing: xs-xxl . Having learned a bit more about my sizing issues with these styles, I sewed a size 10 (small) in the shoulders and arm area, grading to 14 (medium) below. By my measurements I'd be a size 16-18 (large)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, although my apologies for not providing a picture on myself or a dress form.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, they were.
For the gathering on the front, I used a cord foot. Here's a pic showing a detail.... detail This was a good way to do it; easy to keep the line straight, and the stitching hugged the cord nicely, almost like satin stitching. In fact, it hugged so closely that I was afraid the thread might have grabbed the cord, but not to worry, it didn't and gathered very nicely. I think you'd be well off picking a foot that had some space under it to guide the cord.. maybe a zipper foot, or something similar.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Like: comfortable, cool, fun to wear, no question of ever wearing this dress and looking like everyone else!
Only dislike: neck is low enough that my bra is a bit disclosed; I use a decorative pin to close it more, and may add a couple of hand stitches there.
Also, the pockets are so voluminous that I sometimes get them caught on a hand railing or other protuberances. I might make another pleat in them, and resew the button, to pull them in a little more.
Fabric Used: a green linen purchased summer 2012, in a quilt shop in Oregon. I love it, and they were very happy to see it go...
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: none.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I like it a lot, very fun dress. I can imagine making one every summer, just for the fun of it...
pic of finished dress.... Click Here The gathers are straight, btw, the dress itself is hanging askew....
Conclusion: I recommend it, if you're at all inclined to make this dress....
