|Pattern Description: From the pattern. Banded front cardigan with two different front pieces - regular and full bust.|
Pattern Sizing: XS - XL, I made the large with the full bust front and ¾ sleeve.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Pretty much.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the style but I have a short neck and the back neck of the cardi is too high for me. The shoulder seams sit back about an inch from my shoulder point (red line) and I've never had that problem before. It's very obvious in the back view that my right shoulder is higher than my left so it definitely throws off the fit of the garment. The sleeves have two options for shaping - I chose the regular style; the other has a more shaped/tapered seam. Even though I used the full bust front I think I should have done a FBA or added a bit of length in front - this can be seen in the side view photo. I also think it's too long. I measured the pattern and thought it would be okay, but it's not. It feels like a short robe and maybe I'll use it for that. I finished the hem (using steam-a-seam) and sleeves on my cover stitch.
I also didn't care for Pamela's method for hemming the band and cardigan. She has you hem the front band, turn it right side out then pin it to the front which will be an inch longer. Then that inch of fabric is folded up over the hemmed band and all is attached to the front but, in my opinion, it doesn't leave a smooth finish along the bottom. She has 2 videos on You Tube explaining steps 3 (attaching the neck facing), 5 and 6 (attaching the front band) of the pattern. At first I couldn't wrap my head around her method for adding/hemming the band, etc. so the videos did help. In hindsight I would have attached the band and hemmed the whole thing afterward like you would a jacket. After seeing her videos and finally *getting the picture* I felt a little embarrassed. I've never made a cardi before so maybe her method is like other patterns.
Fabric Used: Cotton knit. The knit that I used is a heavier knit but very nice to work with, I don't remember where I got it. It feels like the Juliette that was so popular a while ago. I wouldn't serge the seams again because the fabric is on the heavy side and serging makes the seams too bulky. I also had my needle thread tensions too tight, hence the pucker on my right back near the shoulder.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I doubt I'll sew it again, but I would recommend it and checking the pattern fit for the shoulders before cutting.
Conclusion: I like the style of this cardigan, but it doesn't fit me well thus I don't like the way it looks on me. I have another cardi pattern in mind and if that doesn't work out, I'll go back to jackets as I prefer a more structured look anyway. Most cardi patterns that I've seen just have too much fabric in front.
