This is vintage cocktail dress, a reproduction of an original pattern from Burda's October 1958 magazine. The off shoulder bodice is fitted and has kimono sleeves with underarm gussets. The skirt is tulip and has a petticoat to hold its puffy shape. The technical drawing of this pattern is here
Pattern Sizing: 34-42, I traced 36 and it was perfect when I made it. Now I am 38 at the waist area so it is a little tight, but the fabric is stretch so everything is ok
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? yes it is exactly as I was expecting.
Were the instructions easy to follow? I didn't read them. The only thing I could figure out on my own were the gussets. I found several tutorials about gussets on the web.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love the vintage style of this pattern, it's my favourite style of dress. The fitted kimono sleeves with the gussets are very flattering and adorable. The bodice has a very cute pleat at the top and the neckline is sexy but not very nacked. I think that the whole bodice creates the illusion of a more hourglass figure. I also love the tulip skirt although I didn't add the petticoat so it isn't so voluminus.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I made the center front neckline 2cm higher, because it was too low. I didn't put the petticoat because I wanted a simpler style. I also put a side invisible zipper by hand.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I have already sewn again:P. I think that I will use it 3nd time but in a different way. I think that this pattern is very versatile and somebody can create lots of styles from it. Of course I recommend it, it's an adorable vintage piece. I recommend the whole 11/2007 issue if you can find it.
