|Pattern Description: |
This is Marcy Tilton's coat pattern for Vogue, a review for my second version. I thought that this was different enough to post another review of this wonderful, flattering pattern.
I made a size S. The fit is just a little snug in the upper arms, enough that I won't wear a bulky sweater under it, but perfect for most tops. The same was true in my first versionfirst version.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Similar in terms of the accent pieces; different in that I made it jacket length.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The instructions are good. There seem to be two errors in the pattern tissue, but on closer inspection, and with a little help from a friend, I see that there are no errors at all. The first one was operator error. The second one was a failure to understand the placket construction. I did not use the placket construction for either of my versions.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love everything about this pattern. When I made the first one, I made a muslin that was not full length. I liked it as a jacket in the muslin and so made a second jacket version.
This pattern has great classic styling, I think. I particularly like the fit in the shoulders, the flare at the hips, this standing collar and the front band.
My face fabric is a medium weight linen. I interlined it with radiance, a blend of silk and cotton. I used men's ties and silk remnants for a HK finish to the seams.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
This is essentially view B without the hem darts due to the shorter length, omitting the in seam pockets. I used the idea of the accent pieces with a short length of mud cloth I had in my stash. Some of my accents are functioning pockets. Like others, I think the idea of the accent pieces is a great creative starting place. I don't have buttons yet, but will probably use large bone-colored buttons with large snaps underneath.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
This is a great pattern. It is now my go-to jacket/coat pattern. I think there are many possible variations. I definitely recommend this pattern. I might make it again. I love the fit and the look. In fact I still need to try the placket insertion method on view B.
Conclusion: I am very pleased with this jacket. If this one is not in your pattern stash, then you may want to order it ASAP.
