Making the base of the handbag with cardboard is a weird suggestion of Vogue's IMHO. I use a piece of self-adhesive nap-less floor-carpeting, cut from the kind of carpet tiles they sell in cheap housewares and hardware shops for easy laying down. It's easily cut, the right weight and stiffness, but washable, and because of the adhesive meant to attach to a floor, pretty well fixed to the base of the purse after insertion.
