What kind of attachment do you use?

They are glued together and then a pin back is attached to the back. Some of the newer ones also have a loop for hanging as a pendant.

I totally get what you mean about wanting them to go to "good" homes--my grandmother's button jar wasn't quite so extensive as yours, but still, I am often loathe to use the buttons for fear of where they may end up!
