| Pattern Description: Misses' fitted dresses have empire waist, slightly flared skirt, and zipper at center back. View B has gathers under bust and neckline and armholes finished with facings. I made view B.
Pattern Sizing: XS-XL I made a size small graded to a medium over the hip with a full-bust alteration.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were excellent.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Nothing to dislike about this pattern that I could see.
Fabric Used: Embroidered linen from JoAnn's. It seems the more I complain about our local JoAnn's, (dirty, disorganized, understaffed, understocked with fabric and especially notions, overstocked with kitsch, etc.) the more often I find just what I'm looking for when I go in. This time I was looking for black and white fabric to make tops or dresses to wear when I perform with my chorus and there were 2 pieces of fabric that were just the thing and both were on sale the day I went in.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:The usual. I raised the neckline about 1/2 inch for modesty, made a forward shoulder alteration and a full-bust alteration. On the full bust, because of the gathers under the bust, I closed the side dart formed by the standard FBA alteration from Fit for Real People and opened a dart in the gathered area which just made for more gathers under the bust. I also lowered the under-bust seam my usual inch. Then I made a quick fitting muslin out of an old sheet and was ready to toss the whole pattern and go back to the drawing board for this fabric because the dress looked saggy and matronly. BUT, I remembered seeing roseannec's darling dress from this pattern and went back to look at her picture and read her review again and realized that this pattern is already plenty long in the bodice and didn't need that additional inch to put the seam in a flattering place on my bust. You really don't want it completely under your bust. Another helpful PR member suggested placing it 1/3 of the way up your bust and that's about where it ended up when I put the seam back where it belonged. I also took note of roseannec's comment about the back of the dress and did a quick sway-back alteration just in case and the back looks fine. I don't always do a sway-back alteration, but I probably should.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?I definitely will make this dress again when I find the right fabric. I'd like a rayon batik for a completely different look. Probably 2 dresses in this pattern will be enough.
Conclusion: This is a great summer dress pattern and is easy to sew and fits well. Be careful if you usually lower an empire seam due to formerly perky girls who have become sophisticated women. You may not need as much of an alteration as you usually do in a design of this type.
