| After what seems like months to me, ready to write another review. Though it's not really a review, as the wrap top I made is more a knock-off project.
Front without wrapping Side view Back
A few weeks ago I bought a very simple wrap top, made of a simple knit. This was such a versatile top, that I already decided to knock this specific top in a few basic colors this summer (I bought aqua blue, which is a great summer combination for me with white).
Adriana showed a wrap too on her blog and the link to this video, which started the idea to make a longer version than the one I bought.
Here are the original DKNY wrap top pictures.
I took a good look at the video and decided it wasn't difficult.
Pattern Description Wrap top which can be worn in many different ways.
Pattern Sizing Your size, start with a basic T-shirt pattern from any company. I started with Jalie 2449, just because I have that pattern and love it.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Well, the result is not as beautiful and as lightweight as the DKNY version made of silk and cashmere, but the general idea is close.
Fabric Used A white/black knit, that in the picture turns grey. It is fairly lightweight, which is necessary for a top like this.
How I made this top After studying the video and some pictures at the DKNY site, I concluded that a basic t-shirt pattern would be my starting point. On the bottom the front is made longer, and inititally I made it as wide as the fabric. On both the front and the back of the pattern, I made a sort of attached collar piece. The back and sleeves have no other changes. This is a picture of the front on the fabric. Here a picture of back and sleeve.
When I tried on the wrap before hemming, the wrap came to the floor, because of the total weight of them. I shortened them 40 cm till the lenght shown in the first front picture.
The shoulder and back of the neckline were stabilized with fusible stay-tape. When trying it on the weight of the front pulled the back of the neckline very much forward. This way that is less, though it still does a bit.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I probably will sew this again, I like this style, and I'm one of those women who is cold quite quickly. Combined with living in a moderate climate, these type of tops are great.
Conclusion Easy to make wrap top. It only took a few hours from start of drafting the pattern till finished result.

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | squirrellypoo | 5/31/09 | This is really cool! I like all the different combinations you can wear it in, and it'd be perfect for chilly summer evenings. It looks great with the white trousers, too! | | * * * | | VtMartha | 5/31/09 | I love that you have figured this out! I've been hoping to do the same. Very cool wrap! | | * * * | | mylittleelephant | 5/31/09 | This is so versatile, great look, thank you so much for links and pictures. | | * * * | | unfinishedprojects | 5/31/09 | Why did I think I needed to buy all those wrap patterns? You make it look so easy! | | * * * | | Judy Wentz | 5/31/09 | How interesting! jw | | * * * | | Karenino | 5/31/09 | Lovely! A great piece. Can you tell us how much fabric you needed? | | * * * | | SigridNL | 6/1/09 | Karenino, good point, I forgot to mention that. I used twice the heigt of the front pattern piece plus the length of the back, which is about 2.3 meter all together. | | * * * | | Catbird | 6/1/09 | This is a great sweater and great review! Thank you for including the links for Adriana's blog and the DKNY site -- very inspiring. I've made something similar out of BWOF-2007-128, which I graded down from plus size (and am very tardy in reviewing). I may try it with longer "tails" so I can play around with this idea. This looks wonderful on you! | | * * * | | sew2006 | 6/21/09 | Thank you for your detailed review and the link to DKNY web site. I can't believe that they cost $195!!! I like how you show different ways to wear it, may just have to make a pattern. | | * * * | |
