| Teal version Burgundy version
Pattern Description:
Simple long-sleeved T-shirt with round neckline. Pattern Sizing:
34-44 Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Basicly yes. Got no fur collar... Were the instructions easy to follow?
I did not have a look at them, but as it is a simple shirt you just sew the shoulder seams (use some interfacing for the back shoulder seam to not have it stretch out during wear), sew on the sleeves, sew up the side/sleeve seams, finish the sleeve and shirt hem, finish the neckline. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It is an absolutely simple basic t-shirt - a good pattern to have. Burda cuts their sleevecaps rather high for a knit shirts (more like what is done with wovens), but this makes for a very nice fitting sleeve. The overall fit is good - not as snug as Jalie, but fitted and not loose/boxy at all. I traced this pattern before my pregnancy and went for a 38 then. With my pregnancy bustmeasurement I am a 40 now, but the 38 fits well across the chest. My fabric does have some stretch, though. My guess is that Burda designed this tee with no ease, whereas Jalie designs their shirts with quite some negative ease (so the shirt is smaller than your measurements). Fabric Used:
Rayon/lycra knit, the burgundy fabric is medium weight, the teal is lightweight. Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I enlarged the sleeves a bit, as I tend to have larger upper arms than what tops are designed for. As this is a common thing for me, I always flat pattern-measure the upper sleeve pattern to check if there is enough width. I also varied the sleevelength.
I added a placket to the shirt, as I want to use it for nursing. I made the placket LONG (down to my belly button). I don't know yet how far down I really have to open it up, so I just played it safe. I used snaps with the placket, as I tought this more practical than buttons.
For the placket, I used the method described in the german Burda sewing book (sorry, not avaiable in english), which allows for contrasting fabric. I also used the Singer: sewing with knits (singer reference library) book as a reference for binding the neckline and general tips on sewing with knits. It also describes a placket method (that method would only show the contrast fabric on the inside of the placket).
I tapered out the shirt at the bottom, below the waistline, to have room for my large behind and lengthend the shirt 10cm (4 inches), as the shirt must cover my maternity pants- I guess I will wear those for a while even after having given birth.
Two tips for beginners when sewing knits that I found very helpful:
1. Lower the foot pressure when sewing knits (my machine has "3" as regular setting, I switch to 1 for knits).
2. Especially when sewing with a thin knit, hold on to the needle and bobbin thread when starting to sew a seam. This helps prevent the fabric getting caught in the needleplate. Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I will sew more of these shirts, as I can use several of these with a front placket for nursing. I am thinking of also using a woven for the contrasting placket -it should be working.
If you are looking for a very simple, basic t-shirt pattern, this one is a great one. It is fitted, but not snug and has a great fitting sleevecap. Conclusion:
Basic tee but a great pattern draft. It can be used as a base for all kinds of design changes.

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | Karen6790 | 6/12/09 | What a fabulous basic - somehow I passed by this, probably because I have a TNT KwikSew tee, but I will give this one a try. I like your alteration for nursing - it just looks like a longish placket, I wouldn't have thought that was the reason. Very pretty shirts. | | * * * | | persevering | 6/12/09 | Thanks for your informative review. I am so impressed with how you put the placket on these cute and pratical tops. I've reserved a copy of the 'Singer' book from the public library - hoping to attempt a knit sometime in the not distant future. | | * * * | | TalyQ | 6/13/09 | Looks great, and soon you will a chance to wear them =) | | * * * | | Christas | 6/13/09 | Cute tops! And cool that it works so well for a maternity top too! Your version is so great, love the contrasting placket, maybe it's time for me to dig up that pattern again. | | * * * | | Heatherrique | 6/13/09 | Lovely top!
