Annette and I were having a conversation the other day about pattern companies. She told me I would love sewing with KWIK Sew patterns. I told her that I had never sewn anything from that pattern company before. Next thing I know a package arrives from Annette. I think she must be on first name basis with the UPS truck driver!!! This pattern was in a wonderful box of goodies from her.
Pattern Description:
Wide flared leg pants have fly zipper and shaped wide waistband. Pockets and belt loops are optional.
Pattern Sizing:
XS - XL
I made a small. They have a looser fit, like trousers.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, with the exception of the waist extending a couple of inches or so past center front. I did match all notches and the waist measures what it should, so I feel the pattern picture must be incorrect for the waistband.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, with the exception of pattern piece 7. If you are doing the pants with pockets this pattern piece is only to use for a guide for markings on the pockets. There is a piece number 6 in the exact same shape that you do cut out of fabric. I am soooo good at making stupid mistakes while sewing. Any other person would probably not have thought twice about pattern piece #7! Unfortunately, I make good friends with my seam ripper on all my sewing projects!
The order to sew the pants is in a totally different order than I am used to. You sew the back seam after sewing side seams and inner leg seams. I have never had a pair with the center back seam sewn after side and inner leg seams. At first I thought I would sew in the order I was used to sewing pants, but then changed my mind and thought I would follow the instructions exactly as they were written to compare. So..... you could do these pants in any order you are used to sewing and they would probably come out the same. The KWIK Sew method is just as good as any other. Possibly if you were wanting to do more topstitching on the legs, you might want to sew the back seam before stitching the inner leg seams. Since this was the first time for me to sew this pattern, I left off the top stitching on the legs.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the wide waistband! The flare of the leg is just the right amount of flare! No dislikes!
Fabric Used:
I used a WONDERFUL heavy weight denim from my dear friend, Annette! She bought a 30 yard roll and shared 10 yards with Meggie LuLu and me! The denim is 67 inches wide. The total shrinkage was 1 inch each way after washing twice on a very hot setting. The quality is VERY nice. Here is the place where she bought this lovely denim!
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I did topstitching on the waistband, belt loops, and pockets. I used upholstery thread since it is a nice weight and comes in a great variety of colors. I also used a weight of fabric NOT recommended. The pattern said MEDIUM weight denim was a fabric choice, but I used heavy weight instead. I am happy with the result. I also placed a button and buttonhole on the inside of the waistband. I put two jean buttons and buttonholes on the outside of the band. The pattern called for hooks and eyes.
I also took a deeper seam at top half of the center back waistband to make the jeans a little snugger at my back.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes! I would sew it again and also recommend it highly!
Conclusion:
I think this pattern is a keeper! The trouser style is great for making pants out of traditional trouser fabric. The pattern also makes a great pair of jeans with a wonderful trouser look.

cabinbaby 6/12/09Those are great jeans. I love the dark color of that denim.

Raye Ann 6/12/09lovely on you! could you tell me how high this hits on you? do you think the waist could be lower on this pattern?
* * *
EleanorSews 6/12/09Great trouser jeans and elegant fit. Thanks for the denim source and the in depth review.

homejewel 6/12/09I have this pattern on my wish list and I think I need to move it up higher after seeing your jeans. They look like a great fit. I have the same question as Raye Ann. Does it sit at the true waist or lower? And my daughter and I were also wondering if you made your top (LOL). The whole outfit is so cute!

Christas 6/12/09Raye Ann, The very top of the waistband just barely covers my belly button. homejewel, yes, I did make my top from Burda 3/2008. It is design 109. I would say the pants are at my true waist, not below. They are definitely a higher rise pant. Thanks everyone for the nice comments!

Peggy L 6/12/09Those really turned out great! I love all your topstitching and the fabric you used on the inside. And, yes, I can vouch for the heavy weight denim. It is great quality!

Lori V 6/12/09Fantastic jeans, they look great on you and your topstitching is perfect.

Annette1 6/12/09Man, I LOVE these jeans on you! FUNNY how they look SOOOOOOOOO much better in a SMALL than an XXL! :o)) The WAISTBAND is my FAVORITE part, but I REALLY like those pockets, too. Now that YOU'VE made the pockets, I'm going to put them on my next pair, too. That style of pocket is my FAVORITE. I like the way they feel when you have your hands in your pockets, AND I like the fact that there's no gaping. Oh, and my waistband extended past center front too. I think their picture isn't drawn right. VERY cute! I bet Meggie would like these, too. :o)

Thanks for the link for the denim, as well. I love your topstitching. I would not have thought to do the diagonal stitching at the pocket corners.
