| Pattern Description: Toddler's Robes have extended shoulders, hood, fold-up cuffs, patch pockets, belt loops and self fabric tie belt.
Pattern Sizing:1-4 years old
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, I made two of these robes in View B, but added length so they are ankle-length on my children.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes
The pattern is a classic robe style which is just what I wanted. I was determined to make it with a lovely thick terry towelling like you find in hotels so my girls would feel like they just stepped out of a day spa. click here After searching every fabric store in Melbourne and only finding thin nasty terry in various shades of yellow, I had what I thought was a brainwave, which was to use actual towels. You have far more colours to choose from, and the quality of towelling is much better. (Mine were very thick and luxurious but I waited until they went on sale.) I calculated I needed one standard towel and one bath sheet each to fit all the pieces of a single pattern. The problem, as I soon discovered, was sewing them. This was the project that finally trashed my trusty Brother overlocker that I had for fifteen years. I broke a whole packet of needles and sometimes the overlocker just did not have the power to sew over thick seams.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: These Kwik Sew patterns have consistently been small in sizing (or maybe my kids are gigantic) so I made one size larger, and added a lot of length in the arms and body. The pattern is very basic and loose so it is easy to build in some growing room. The wrong side of the fabric shows on the inside hood and turned up-cuffs, which isn't a problem if you use towelling or fleece. And I think it is better to just roll up the cuff rather than stitch it in place as per the instructions, because kids grow pretty fast!! I stitched the (visible) collar seam down with a zigzag to flatten it --the stitching is hidden in all that fluff and it gives a neater finish. On the second robe, which is watermelon pink, I also bound the cuff edge for decorative effect with a fine bias-cut strip of matching fabric.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I am sure in the recommended fabrics this would be much easier and quicker as it's a nice pattern. Thick towelling is great after the kids' bath, because it's absorbent, and very warm, but I would not repeat this experiment with towels for fear of damaging my (new) machine. If you had access to a tougher machine or an industrial one, it should be very straightforward. And I did love the results. click here

The good quality towels was a great idea, but sorry to hear that it trashed your overlocker. The robes are great though!!! | | * * * | |
