| Basically this is a review to give my idea on how to sew this wrap differently. When the July issue arrived, my daughter immediately wanted to make this wrap top. I recently made one, and she wanted one too.
This pattern is rated with 1 dot, the easiest level with BWOF. My daughter is a beginner, and likes to sew something for herself from time to time. This ended up a wadder, not motivating.
Pattern Description From the website: In good shape. Well-wrapped is well-styled! This casual jacket not only looks cool – it will also protect you from cool sea breezes....
Pattern Sizing European sizes 34-44
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, the instructions are easy enough, but do not make for easy sewing.
You will have to draw the pattern by instructions given in the magazine (not tracing).
The instructions of BWOF are to cut a slit in the fabric where you have to sew in the sleeve. So after sewing the sleeve seam, you have to sew the sleeve in the round in the slit of the fabric. This is not easy, and my daughter did not succeed in doing it well.
After unpicking the first (serged) sleeve, I sewed in the sleeves for her, and didn't think it was a neat way to do this.
I started thinking about the way this pattern was constructed and thought of another way of construction (wish I did that earlier). This is wat I came up with, adding a seam for shoulder and sides. In this way you can do the construction in the following order:
- Sew shoulder seams
- Set in sleeves (in the flat!)
- Sew sleeve and side seams in one pass
- Hem the top
(The drawing on top is the BWOF way, the lower drawing my change)
This does not improve the fit, but is easier to make imho. My daughter finished the top by seaming it and the general idea is not as it should be. No pictures possible anymore, she declared it a wadder and won't put it on again, and I think she's right. The armhole placement is very low, and in general it didn't look in proportion on her. It will certainly depend on the fabric you'll use, but next time I will certainly not use this pattern, but will make a pattern, based on a t-shirt pattern, like I did for myself.

I love the Vogue wrap and have hadmuch success.I will not be trying this one and will stick with my Vogue TNT. Thanks! | | * * * | | cabinbaby | 6/21/09 | Thanks for the warning!!! | | * * * | | Cidell | 6/21/09 | Thanks for the heads up and suggestion. I want to make this too, so I appreciate your help! | | * * * | | michellep74 | 6/21/09 | Thanks for the warning about this one. I have the Simplicity pattern, and while I usually prefer Burda's fit, I think I'll stick with the Simplicity version. | | * * * | | franticfashion | 6/22/09 | Rats! I had this down as a 'must-have'. Well, maybe not. I liked your version and will try to make something similar. | | * * * | | Kayseri | 6/23/09 | Thanks for the warning and the alternate instructions. | | * * * | | tracylou | 7/4/09 | Check out Lauriana's winged wrap cardigan on Burdastyle: http://www.burdastyle.com/howtos/show/1906
It's based on a long-sleeved t-shirt pattern and looks more flattering and a bit easier than the pattern in July's BWOF. | | * * * | | Spring | 7/10/09 | Oh Im crushed. I have wanted one of these for almost three years! I was so excited to see the pattern in this issue. My last project was a wadder and I don't need another one right now. | | * * * | | joannaH | 8/21/09 | I've made this one out of wool jersey and with hindsight I would cut the sleeve slits to a more rounded shape, (might still do), as they drag a bit at the top. Also the back is a bit too wide so the sleeves sit too far forward, but that could be the stretchy fabric I used. I'm basically pleased with it and will wear it, the shawl style suits the softness of the fabric I used. | | * * * | |
