| I was planning to sew the highly reviewed Runaround Bag by Lazy Girl Designs and wanted to compare it with a similar Kwik Sew bag. Kwik Sew always has good instructions.
Pattern Description: 2 Lined bags (views A and B) with shoulder straps; lined coin purse (view C); lined wristlet (view D); and belt. View A has flap with loop and button closure. View B has contrast fabrics and zipper closure. I made view B, the zippered, lined bag with shoulder straps and contrast fabric.
Pattern Sizing: The bags in Views A and B measure 8 1/2 " tall by 7" wide.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, but the lining wrinkled (see photo below) after turning the bag. I didn't try to get rid of these wrinkles, because I've learned that too much pressing at the end can actually cause more wrinkles on the exterior. The pattern calls for two contrast fabrics, but I only used one -- the black strip.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, but I found it difficult to "stitch, starting and stopping stitches close to zipper" and my execution fell short.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Like: The contrast fabric strip and the zippered top. As mentioned, I didn't care for the method of sewing up to, but not across the zipper -- Perhaps with more practice, I would do better next time, but I left holes at both ends of the zipper that must be fixed with hand-sewing--I wasn't in the mood to turn it inside out, rip it out, and re-sew it. You can see the problem in here. (Sorry about the adding machine tape in the photo.)
Another thing I didn't like was the fact that the straps were attached on the sides rather than at the top. If I ever sew this again (uncertain about this right now), I will do something else -- maybe use a wristlet=type strap, instead. There aren't any pockets, but one could be added on the back.
Fabric Used: More of that zebra print home dec fabric used for the laptop sleeve that I reviewed earlier; bengaline for the contrast fabric and strap; quilting cotton for the lining; medium weight fusible interfacing.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: The straps might have been shortened--since the bag is intended for my 11 yo granddaughter. I can't find the bag right now (my 7 yo granddaughter is visiting!) to measure it.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Not sure if I'll sew it again.
Conclusion: I like Lazy Girl's Runaround Bag better.
