| Pattern Description:
The Kiwk Sew Easy Sewing book is a book with patterns included. It is available on PR. The book has basic patterns for T-shirt, blouse, pants (reg, cropped, and shorts), straight skirt, and gored skirt. I made the shorts
Pattern Sizing: XS-S-M-L-XL. I made the medium and tapered to the L at the hip
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Very easy and very thorough instructions. They give several different ways to do things. For example, for the elastic waist, it gave instructions for sewing a casing around the elastic, sewing the casing first and inserting the elastic, and serging on the elastic, which is what I did.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? What I liked was how super fast and easy it was. I wanted to wear these shorts tonight the the fourth of July celebrations and it only took me a couple of hours to make them. Dislikes, well, I won't be winning any high-fashion points with these shorts
Fabric Used: I had a red linen blend in my stash.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: The pattern has optional inseam pockets, but I left them off since this was a "trial pair." I made the shorts 3" longer to make the knee length and I narrowed the legs about 1/2" at each hem side seam and I lowered the waist about 1/5 inches. The directions tell you how to try on the pants with the waist elastic and mark it to know how high to make it. If you have never made any kind of pants or shorts before, you can be successful with these!
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes. These shorts are perfect for their intended purpose- which is to be super comfortable and casual. I was goiing to cut out another pair in black, but realized I needed to pre-wash the fabric first, so it's in the wash right now! Next time I will try them with the pockets. The book gives you two different options for inseam pockets.
I probably will do something with the crotch curve in the back, although I'm not sure what yet. I've noticed that some of my RTW shorts do this same thing in the back, and it's hard to avoid with elastic waist pants. back view
** as you can see there is some bunching underneath the butt. I lowered the crotch curve in the back after I wore these, and that seemed to fix it!
Conclusion: I have had this book for a long time, but never made anything out of it. What I like about the book is that it gives you very simple patterns and tells you how to change them around to get different looks. For example, there are a couple of different necklines and sleeve variations for the Tshirt and they show you how to make it into a nightgown, as well as several different types of tops.
THese shorts are comfortable and easy to wear. It's really hot here in the summer, so when I am just working around the house or running to the store, I want something comfortable to wear. Perfect for the beach or after a swim!

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | Annette1 | 7/5/09 | This sounds like a great set of patterns, and your shorts just fit the bill for a 4th of July celebration, going right on into the LONG summer. I especially like the length (AND your little dog). | | * * * | | Padmé | 7/5/09 | I've got 10 to 12 pair of the pants in lightweight oxford and broadcloth that I wear on most days. I've also made the shorts in a knit or sweatshirt fleece for pilates. | | * * * | | marjenann | 7/5/09 | There is nothing better than wearing a fashionable garment that you create. The red linen is perfect!! Great look for any summer day!!!
Annette | | * * * | | Rhoda K | 7/5/09 | Hmmm, I have a red linen blend in my stash . . . . as always, a great review. You mentioned a problem with the crotch curve in back, but didn't say what it was, or did I miss something? | | * * * | | Nancywin | 7/5/09 | The fabric was "bunching" right below my butt. I lowered the curve in the back about 1/2" and that seemed to solve it! | | * * * | | Rhoda K | 7/5/09 | Thank you - good to know. Your reviews are very helpful. | | * * * | | Grammy Gin | 7/5/09 | I have this book also & never made a thing from it. I am giving my oldest granddaughter one of my sewing machines & thought I would give this book to her.....NOW... you make these neat shorts...maybe I will trace off a few of the patterns before I give it to her! ;-) | | * * * | | Sewingmi | 7/5/09 | A very nice review! I have this book and have made the t-shirt (which is great and easy to sew!) but I've never tried the pants. Yours look great! | | * * * | | Heatherrique | 7/14/09 | Nancy, actually your shorts are cool and upbeat! Thanks for your review. You inspired me to get on the shorts bandwagon (I have not worn them out of the house for probably nearly a decade). I really appreciate you sharing your fix for the "bunching" which I have with certain pants patterns. | | * * * | |
