I was looking for a comfortable knit skirt to replace a flared, black ankle length one I have. I thought I'd make this pattern up in a leftover fabric before I cut my 3m of black cotton-lycra.
Pattern Sizing:
Misses XS-XL (hip 32-47")
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Sort of. Except uglier.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
This is an extremely simple skirt. It only has two pieces and you can serge the lot. The instructions were fine.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Well the sizing is a bit off. This was loose and too big. I made an XL (for waist 35-37, hip 45-47), and I have waist 37, hip 47 and it was too big and rode down. That said I did accidentally cut it out the wrong way round ie with the knits going across not up and down, but I think the sizing still would have been off.
Also, I just think it looks ugly. They way you get little folds under the band, it's just yuk.
Fabric Used:
Bright blue cotton-lycra jersey, very think and strongly stretchy that had bought to make PJs for my daughter but never did.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
None except made it shorter as I didn't have enough fabric.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Definitely not. It might be easy but it is also ugly and ill-fiitting. I didn't hem it and I certainly will never wear it. I can hopefully salvage enough fabric to make a T-shirt for my daughter at some point.
Conclusion:
Easy but ugly pattern. Runs large. Would not recommend. There must be nicer knit skirt patterns out there.

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | JustTrina | 7/7/09 | i honestly don't think it looks bad! maybe a little loose, but you could always go back and take it in a bit on the side seams. Maybe try it with a different top, like a cami since it has that fold over waist? when in doubt i normally just hang it on a manni and look at it for a few days, if then you decide to wad it, like you said you can always get a t-shirt out of it!! sorry it wasn't what you wanted! let us know when you find that great knit skirt pattern!!! | | * * * | | Mel.J | 7/7/09 | This skirt looks similar to a free one from Fabric.com being discussed on the message boards at the moment. Is it worth measuring your existing black skirt to try to salvage this one with some cutting down? | | * * * | | Karen M M | 7/7/09 | Claire Shaeffer's High Fashion Sewing Secrets gives good instructions on how to copy an RTW garment. I would go that route. I have said goodbye to several items of clothing in my past I wish I had kept to copy once they wore out because I loved, loved, loved them. | | * * * | | morzel | 7/7/09 | Sorry this one didn't work out for you- at least you did this muslin. Maybe the fabric you used is too thick for this kind of skirt? Thanks for the info on the sizing, the other review also states the sizing as off. | | * * * | | Mary Nanna | 7/7/09 | I too am on the look out for a nice knit skirt. Will watch your progress with interest. | | * * * | | FreyaStark | 7/8/09 | I'm sorry the pattern was disappointing and you had such a frustrating experience. Learning how fabrics behave, which fabrics suit which patterns and which patterns suit us is a challenging part of sewing. Look on the bright side: even our failures teach us something. I hope you can salvage the fabric. | | * * * | | Sewingmi | 7/8/09 | It actually does look like a cute skirt! Maybe you just need a smaller size. It looks really comfortable! | | * * * | |
