| Pattern Description:
Jacket/blouse with a wide lapel. I wanted a top that would work as a jacket over simple tshirts or tank tops as well as by itself. It is part of my post-delivery/nursing wardrobe, with its increased bust measurements. I keep the colours of all this coordinated (burgundy, seagreen, midblue) to have coordinating garments in this new size. This way I don't need that many items in the beginning, as I don't know how long I will stay this size. Pattern: Here you can see the pattern pieces layed out. I cut everything on straight grain. Fabric Used:
Seagreen stretch cotton sateen. This is easy to wash, so great for a "mom on the go". Detailed description of the process:
I wanted something a little dramatic, but not over the top. So I drafted a wide lapel with a non-collared neckline, otherwise the jacket is a very simple style. I am still on the fence about the size of the lapel, I think I would make it a bit smaller if I were to make such a style again.
I had a cutting mishap, but didn't want to waist this wonderful fabric by recutting the whole front. After all as a sewist I am the designer of this baby, so scissors to the rescue! I just decided to introduce a narrow yoke at the front shoulder... (nobody knows later that this was not an intentional design feature) This way I only used a little bit of fabric and there is enough left for a skirt later. ;)
The sleeves are just straight sleeves. I didn't like the way they "winged" outward when the hem is just turned upward, so I pintucked them slightly (on the outer side, a little towards the side back). Here's the comparison of the pintucked versus the straight sleeve (pintucked on the left). In afterthought I could have made even one or two more pintucks.
All seams and the edges are topstitched. To have the best topstitching result on the edge, I didn't do that line in one go. I topstitched the front opening with the front up and where the roll of the lapel is I turned the garment and topstiched the lapel from the other side (as this is the upper side of the lapel). I didn't turn again at the back neck, as this will be not on prominent view (with all that hair).
The jacket lacks button/buttonholes - I will do those some time after delivery of the baby, when the baby bump is less "prominent".
The ease in this jacket is generous, as I don't know what my bust measurement will be when nursing... I went for 12cm (4.75") of ease. Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I will use the basic draft of this again, but change the collar/lapel design. I think this one is very distinctive, don't need another one. Conclusion:
I think will get some wear out of this this summer. I plan to use it instead of my usual cardigan, to look a bit put together.
