| Intro: This is one of my favourite baby patterns. The style is simple but you can do so much with it just by changing the fabrics and/or adding different embellishments. Plus it's quick and easy to sew, and ideal if you need a baby gift in a hurry, assuming you have a stash of baby fabrics but who doesn't. ;) I sewed this entire outfit in an afternoon as a gift for friends. (The pattern was already traced).
Close-up photo of outfit. I also knitted the bootees.
Pattern Description: Baby romper, cardigan, pants and hat for knit fabrics. Suitable for both boys and girls.
Pattern Sizing: XS (newborn) to XL (18mths). I made the Small which fits an average 3mth old, with room to grow. The pattern envelope says 0-3mths but I'd say it fits 3mth+. Kwik Sew baby patterns can tend to be a little on the large size in my experience.
Fabric Used: Designed for knit fabrics with 25% stretch. The pattern works well with a variety of fabric types. For the pants and hat I used a cotton velour. The cardigan is a flat-back ribknit, both from Spotlight, Australia.
Did it look like the pattern photo/drawing? Yes, very much so.
Likes and Dislikes: I like that you can sew a complete outfit with this pattern. The style is basic and practical but you can do a lot with it. No dislikes.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. As I always say, if you want to learn to sew, buy a Kwik Sew pattern. Their instructions are not only good but also the sewing techniques they use are good. By following the instructions you can produce a high quality garment that doesn't look home-made.
Pattern Alterations: My only alteration was to the hat. I find the tie section at the top too narrow and flimsy. I widened it 1/4" each side (total 1/2") and also rounded off the top.
Construction Details: On the cardigan rather than bind the edges per the instructions I used a satin binding and sewed it to the inside, only because I thought it suited my fabric. I used snaps for the closure. On the hat I added a short piece of flower trim for decoration.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I have sewn this pattern countless times for both boys and girls. It's a good pattern to invest in and a good wardrobe builder for a baby. I highly recommend it.
