| Pattern Description:
Summer version of the famous little black dress (for the not so little-figured girl)
Pattern Sizing:
German Size 44-52, I made a 48
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Absolutely yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
As I'm accustommed to Burda instructions I had no problems to follow them. Even though at the only tricky point (attaching the folds to the facing with handstitches) they leave you alone. I had no real problem to do it but in the process some of the stitches I had done were making it more difficult to attach other folds, so I wonder whether there would have been a better way?
What I also did not appreciate was that you have to pick pieces of the instructions from other instructions. Like "do this like in 101", "do that like in 110", and attach the zipper as descriped on page ??. (Yes, there were question marks.) Im am referring to the German issue, so maybe they fixed that on the international issues.
For the pockets Burda tells you to do the seam first, leaving an opening and then attaching the pockets to the SA. I am not sure whether it would not have been easier to attach the pockets first and then make the seam?
I made one smaller modification to the hem, I turned it not once but twice, that looks cleaner to me.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
All my life I had said "Bouledress or skirt? No, thank you. Never. No way."
But the great pleats on the neckline of the dress immediately had me. So I gave the pattern a second, third and forth look and finaly decided, that this amout of "boule" is something I would like to try, because here it looks quite smart.
I think this depends much on the fabric, it has to have a certain stiffness, to show the shape, but not to much, so the dress can move and swing around the body when you move.
Fabric Used:
I used a fabric called "silicon popelin" from the "Bizz Kids" brand in black. I had remenants from another project in 2007 that were just enough. The pattern asks for 3,05m in my size, mine was shorter, a little larger and it had a rather big adhering piece which had still a considerable lenght, but not full width. And it was just enough.
Since the sleeve is quite large you will at least need two time the length of the dress plus the sleeve length. But the small parts you can well squeeze in differently from the Burda layout.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
Surprisingly few alterations. I reduced the shoulders by 1cm (each) and took out 2cm in length above the waist.
I got away without a full bust alteration and I did not have to add width for my hips.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I will not sew it again because I think one of that kind is enough. (Also I am not to much into "mass production", I prefere to have garments that are different from each other.)
But I would recommend it. It was quick and easy to sew and I love the result.
Conclusion:
I love that dress. It wears perfect on hot summer days, because the dress is wide enough to hang loosely around the body (it barely touches the body except on the shoulders) but still looks "smart" enough to wear in the city. That also makes it perfekt for the office on hot days. And the long sleeves are nice when you are waiting forthe train at 7.30 a.m. (here the mornings can start relatively cool, before heat comes in in the afternoons.)
And if I ever get bored about "boule", I can remove the elastic from the hem... ;)
