I really love the ruffle look that has appeared a lot this season. Several people reviewed McCalls 5852 and made adorable tops. Like a few others have done, I morphed another pattern with that one as I didn't want a true halter style. A few years ago, I made New Look 6655 in a woven and really liked it. I still wear the top, in fact, but I have to admit that the tie at the neck is a bit uncomfortable in a woven. I thought a slinky knit would be more comfortable and thin enough to accommodate the four-five layers of fabric required for the ruffles.

Because I really only used the ruffles from M5852, I am reviewing this top under NL6655 as I used the top pattern for that one and just plopped the ruffles on top.

Pattern Sizing: I made this in a size 10.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? No but only because I combined two patterns.

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions for both patterns were quite easy.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Very flattering style with the cut out shoulders.

Fabric Used: I am not quite sure of the fabric content but it is a slinky knit with lycra and it has a lot of stretch. The trim in the front is just a simple black woven braid, top stitched just below the upper and lower bodice seam. I knew I would wear this top with black pants/skirt and I wanted to add a pop of black to it.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: I added the ruffles from M5852 to the top pattern in NL 6655. I needed to slightly re-draft the neckline and sleeveline so the two patterns would merge correctly. It was easy to do and worked perfectly. NL 6655 called for woven seam binding but I made my own from the knit so I would lose any of the stretch (and comfort!)

I did not finish the edges of the ruffles. I have noticed this lack of finishing on ready made tops and like the look (if it's a good quality fabric). I didn't want to add any more bulk by hemming or rolling the edge.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I would like to try View B.

Conclusion: I love this second version even more than the first one. I've worn it twice now and received quite a few compliments.
