  Cardi Sew Along
Pattern Description:
Cardigan and sleeveless shell, both knit. The cardi is a knockoff of the increasingly popular DKNY cozy.

Pattern Sizing:
XXS - M in the envelope that I have. I made size S of view B - which has the super long fronts and the 3/4 sleeves.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes! I actually think the cardigan looks best when worn with a top of the same color (like on the Simplicity envelope) or when your top and pants are the same color (like in the DKNY video 12 ways to wear a cozy).

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, I followed them pretty much verbatim.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The worst part of making this is cutting out the huge fronts, which must be done in a single layer, and required a fair amount of maneuvering during cutting as the front piece wouldn't all fit at once on my Olfa cutting board.

The best thing about this top is its versatility - it's perfect for travel! You can wear it like an open-front cardigan, with the front draped, or wrapped around and fitted, for example.

Fabric Used:
Poly/lycra jersey from the Vera Wang Lavender Label collection, from fabric.com.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
Same two things that Tany did: (1) stitched the neck facing to the neck seamline so the elastic at the CB seam wouldn't ever be exposed, and (2) I left the edges raw since this fabric doesn't fray (I got clean cuts with a rotary cutter).

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I am definitely planning to make this again. Cardigans are my new best friends this fall. This is a very easy and fast pattern to make (especially if you leave the front edges and hem raw!), I made this in about half a day. If you've got 3 yards of drapey jersey to spare, go for it.

Conclusion:
Watching the DKNY video convinced me to make this cardi, and I don't regret it. I know I'm going to wear this to death this fall & winter.

EleanorSews 8/12/09Your links are wonderful! You look so smart in all variations. I'm a believer and will be buying this pattern when Simplicity goes on sale next week-end. The jacket and top would be perfect theater wear, especially with a matching skirt (monochromatic works well for me).

katie lynne 8/17/09This garment is absolutely fabulous on you! Donna and Vera should see you. I appreciate all the helpful links and extra pictures. Gotta question: I know hemming isn't needed, but how does the 'raw' edge wear? Do you think it will withstand all the rubbing which will certainly happen since there will be a lot of tying/untying? Super review!

madhatter 8/20/09I wouldn't have looked at the pattern twice, but your version made me want one, too! Unfortunately it seems it's not available over here, so I will have to live without it. Anyhow - LOVE your version. It's so versatile and it suits you perfectly!
* * *
Christina Sonja 8/21/09katie lynne - I hope the raw edge holds okay. It probably depends on the fabric. This fabric, I think, may develop some slight fuzziness at the raw edges after a few washings... that's just my guess. We'll see!

penelopekc 9/5/09Your versions are terrific. Thanks for the photos. Hope mine turns out this good. Glad you inspired the sew along.
