| Pattern Description:
A basic men's t-shirt with round or v neckline, short or long sleeves.
Pattern Sizing:
Sizes from S to XXL, including men with chest measurements from 34" to 52". I blended between an XL and an XXL, comparing the flat pattern measurements both to my DH's measurements and to the measurements of his favorite Lands' End tees. I was trying to duplicate the fairly relaxed fit of the LE tees.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, basically, in spite of my cutting errors. *sigh*
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very easy. This is a pretty basic design, though: front, back, two sleeves, neck binding. I did not use Kwik Sew's instructions for the neck binding, see below.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Likes: This is a good basic tee very much like the sort of thing he usually wears. The pattern went together nicely. I like the basic shape of the garment.
Dislikes: The neckline is wider and rounder than most of his other shirts. If I really want to duplicate his other tees, I need to redraft the neckline so it's higher and closer-fitting.
Fabric Used:
A very soft and comfy striped cotton jersey I bought from fabric.com about a year ago.
The stripes caused me some problems. Although I thought I had lined up the fabric carefully when folding it, I in fact cut out the front slightly off grain (I think) and the back significantly off grain. In spite of this, the stripes match nicely at the side seams! Go figure. I didn't fully realize this until I decided to even up the bottom before hemming. I started at a stripe and cut around...and around... and then realized with horror that I was cutting in a spiral.
Fortunately the design runs pretty long, so I evened it up as best I could and hemmed it. The hem hangs a bit unevenly, but he doesn't care.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
Instead of using Kwik Sew's instructions for the neck band, I cut the band half as wide as specified, sewed the ends together, folded it in half, and applied it to the neckline (both raw edges against the raw edge of the neckline. That way the band fills in the overly large neckline a little.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I expect to make more of these for him (although next time I cut stripes I'll be more careful!). Having carefully measured him and had success with this, I also feel more confident about trying other types of men's clothing.
Conclusion:
Great basic tee for men.
