| Pattern Description: Men's flat-front pants and shorts have front side pockets, fly zipper, waistband with belt loops, back welt pockets with
button closures.
Pattern Sizing: S-XL. I made a L of view B (the shorts) for my boyfriend.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. This was my first time making a Kwik Sew pattern, but I always hear people rave about how good their instructions are. It's true! I'm making a BWOF pattern next and I will sorely miss the high quality instructions.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? No dislikes. The pattern is easy to sew and is just a classic men's pant. It is easy to adjust for fit and comes with clear instructions for how to do so.
Fabric Used: A 100% cotton plaid seersucker. I love the way the fabric looks, but I discovered it wasn't the greatest fabric to work with. The weave is pretty loose, so it frays like crazy and was more delicate to work with than it should have been. Once sewn up it was fine.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: I only had to make a few small alterations to get a good fit for my BF. (Boy, is it easy to fit a man!) I took them in a little at the center back seam and in the front, and shortened the crotch depth a bit. Easy alterations to do, especially with Kwik Sew's helpful directions. Next time, I might lengthen the legs to make up for the shortened crotch depth - when I made the muslin the shorts seemed plenty long, possibly even requiring a wider hem than called for, but when I made the actual shorts I had to do a pretty narrow hem to have them be the length my BF wanted (hitting just above the knee). If I make the pants I'll definitely have to lengthen, as my BF is tall and has long legs.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes and yes!
Conclusion: I think this will be a TNT shorts/pants pattern for my BF. They fit him well and it is a very simple, classic style. Also, really easy to make! If I hadn't needed to match the plaids and deal with the slightly wonky fabric, I would have had these done very quickly. The only thing I need to work on with these is keeping the pockets from gaping out, which they do a little bit now.

These shorts are my entry for the Advanced Beginner Contest. Here is the additional information for my entry:
Sewing experience: I started sewing just about two years ago. I am self-taught. Pretty much everything I've learned has been from books, the internet (especially PR when I discovered it!), and my own experience. I've done mostly garment sewing but also made a few basic home dec items when I was redoing my room last year.
Outside help: The only source I turned to other than PR was Debbie Cook's tutorial on sewing fly front zippers.
New techniques: Lots of firsts for me in sewing these shorts!
It was my first time:
1) Making menswear.
2) Making pants.
3) Matching plaids.
4) Sewing a fly front zipper.
5) Sewing front side pockets.
6) Sewing welt pockets.
Matching plaids was the most difficult. Not really difficult, actually, more like time-consuming and occasionally annoying. I had to cut out all my pieces from a single layer and match them, so cutting took forever, and since seersucker is kind of puckered and wavy, I had to be really careful; and I had to redo parts of seams a few times to get the plaids to match, especially when I was dealing with getting them to match in both directions on the center back/crotch seam. I found the other stuff - the pockets and especially the zipper - so easy that I wondered a few times if I was doing something wrong! | Buy this pattern for $11.49 Add to Bag |

Pattern with more than 5 reviews! << Previous Review Next Review >> | Reader Comments | | Annette1 | 8/31/09 | GREAT job on your review, Chicaem, but more importantly: HOW 'BOUT THAT PLAID!! GREAT job on your matching. I know your boyfriend is so proud of his new shorts, especially because you made them for him. Good luck in the contest! | | * * * | | Karen6790 | 8/31/09 | Great job. I haven't gotten around to trying pants for my DBF yet - he's got more shirts than he knows what to do with, so I should try one of these days. This is a good pattern and you did a great job - lots of firsts, and all done well. | | * * * | | Raye Ann | 8/31/09 | thank you for highlighting this pattern! it does look like a great basic pattern for menswear. great job on yours, esp the plaid matching! | | * * * | | jent | 9/1/09 | These look great and your review is really excellent. I agree most of the "difficult" techniques to master in sewing are really just time consuming and annoying :) | | * * * | | marec | 9/1/09 | Wow, these look fabulous Chicaem. Very impressive. | | * * * | | Mahogany Stylist | 9/1/09 | Wow! You had a lot of firsts in this project. Great job. | | * * * | | mary in FL | 9/1/09 | Pretty darn good for so many "firsts!"
