| Pattern Description:
Misses' dress or tunic has princess side panels, keyhole neckline, band collar, and optional sleeves.
Pattern Sizing:
4-20. I cut an 8 at the top and a 12 at the hip. I should have cut the bodice a 6, I think.
Fabric Used:
Mystery stretch faux-linen from the G Street Fabrics $2.97/yd table. There was only 1.25 yards, so it was tight but I couldn't find anything I liked in a blue I liked.
The accents are polyester crepe from Joann's "Casa Collection." I used a coupon and it was $4.80/yd.
Total cost, including pattern and notions: under $15
(various other components of the costume added more to the cost, but the dress and hat were about $15)
Time to Make:
I had limited time to make this as I have been so busy lately! I knocked it out in about 8 hours, taking less care than I would with "real" clothes.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Although there have been some cute versions made, particularly LoriV's piped number, somehow this pattern does not speak to me as daywear. But for a retro air hostess costume, I loved the vintage-y late 60s/early 70s vibe. As I was making it, I realized it was quite similar to Simplicity 6276, a 1974 pattern a made last year.
I really wish the pockets had been drafted onto the side princess panel, it would have been much more sophisticated than just a patch pocket. But I did not have time to redraft so I stuck with the patch pocket motif. I really liked the way EvLouise's version turned out with the contrast collar and pockets, so I went with that.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Other than my change to the keyhole and the length, it did.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, they were clear with plenty of illustrations.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
-It's hard to tell how A-line this dress is as there is quite a discrepancy between the illustrations and the live model photos. Judging by the versions made up by other PR contributors it appears to be moderately A-line. Although this is more historically accurate, I find a slimmer silhouette more flattering for me so I narrowed the side seams just a tad.
-I did an SBA on the front princess panel by shaving width off the bust curve (as in this example--this is not the pattern piece for this particular dress).
-I took a huge swayback tuck out of the back, and still had to do major contouring of the center back seam. Thank you, Simplicity, for reminding me how much your dress patterns do *not* fit me, LOL. This ended up shortening the back hemline significantly--I cut about two inches off center front to hem and zero off center back--but luckily this is meant to be worn short!
-I wanted an exaggerated keyhole opening to go with the style, so I cut out a teardrop shape.
-For both the keyhole opening and the armscyes I finished with bias tape rather than facings.
-I added buttonholes to the pockets, so that I wouldn't have to carry around a purse on Halloween but my money and ID would be a little more secure. The gold buttons also add to the air hostess feel, I think.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I love this for the costume, but there are many things to sew on my list so making this again isn't high on my priority list.
If you like the style, you should go for it. The front princess panels are unusual and allow for a good fitting opportunity for the bust.
Conclusion
I totally love this costume. It's not as over-the-top as I usually go, but it is what I had in mind and the accessories really dress it up. I felt very retro in it!
All photos are here, and I wrote blog posts on the concept, the uniform, and a tutorial for the hat. | Buy this pattern for $15.95 Add to Bag |
